I’ve been fascinated by watches since I was a kid. My first was a gold plated Elgin three handed. After that a Rolex Datejust (for my 16th B/day!), AP RO Quantième Perpetuel, an Omega deVille, Rolex Oysterquartz DayDate, TH glassbox chrono, Weiss field, Vulcain Nautique, AvI-8 Tuskegee, Cartier Santos in RG, Hamilton 38mm Murph Khaki and most recently a SS/ YG Rolex GMT Master II and SU Watermelon chrono. I still have them all. In addition to my interest in watches, I have several vintage cars including a Mercedes Pagoda 280SL that’s been in my family since new. I judge dogs at AKC events and enjoy gardening/hiking.
Always enjoyed the mechanics and intricacy of watches.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
An Elgin. Don’t remember the actual model but it was a manual wind.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
As a teen I read about Rolex watches and how they were used on various expeditions. I was a very good students and after scoring a 1460 on my SAT, my parents gave me one for my 16th birthday. Still have it including receipt from Shreve & Co., box, papers, hang tag and model sticker.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Take your time. Determine your needs and likes. Save up, if need be, to get exactly what you want. Don’t spend more than you can actually afford. Be prepared to care for your watch(es).
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
My tastes are varied. Everything from Studio Underdog to A Lange!
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
A. Lange & Sohne Datograph Perpetual.
Why? The mechanics, engineering, finish and design are all of the very highest quality.
