Did You Know - Quartz Battery Conservation

When a quartz watch's battery is approaching the end of its life, the seconds hand will tick once every 4 seconds instead of once per second. This is to conserve battery power an alert you of the issue. Grabbed one of my old quartz pieces this morning and it was doing this. I had no idea what was going on and consulted Google. How many here knew this feature, I'm sure there will be more Yes vote than No ;-)

They sometimes tick once every 2 seconds depending on the movements.

Whaaaaaaaaaat?

This is new...

Not every quartz watch has an EOL indicator. Obviously any 2 handed quartz with no seconds hand will not, but there are also some with seconds hands that don't have this feature.

To add to what tempus stated. Generally only higher end quartz watches have this feature. It is a mandatory feature in Diver's watches. (Quartz watches that meet the ISO standard for dive watches) This prevents the owner from not being aware his watch is about to die and stop working while they are under water. Military spec quartz movements are also generally required to have this feature.

Interesting, my watch is an old Victorinox Swiss Army.
