Casioak - Compromise or Perfection

Interested to know how you all feel about the Casioak. Mostly referring to the GAB-2100. This is mostly just how you feel about the watch more than an objective review.

Do you see it as the best of both digital and analog? Or do you see it as a compromise, meaning not as good as a straight up digital or straight up analog?

On the wrist, I find the digital display tiny and hard to read, to the point that it may as well not be here, on top of being redundant with the analog display 90% of the time when not using the watch functions.

It feels like it was forced there as a mandatory feature of the gshock line, but really they were trying to make a trendy watch inspired by the RO.

For my usage, I could do without the digital display and with a longer batery life instead.

I can't see the digital display. I've still not worked out 90% of the features and probably never will but the analog works fine and I can just ignore the digital. .

I think it's G shock appealing to a large section of people that can't quite bring themselves to buy a g shock, as well as to another section of people that love g shocks and want a slightly more normal looking watch as an option. I'm not really into it, personally, but I think it does color outside of the lines a lot of people precieved around g shocks and "regular watches." To some, it's an unnecessary and awkward hybrid, and to others it's just what they wanted to finally be able to like a g shock or finally be able to wear a less aggressive or rugged looking g shock.

It's quite obviously done quite well for itself, so even as someone not interested in it, I can't exactly fault it. I don't think it concedes any part of G shock's identity. The squares have always been tame, visually, and they've done lots of anidigi stuff before. It makes perfect sense to try a "cleaner" case design with their anidigi experience to see if people bite, and they did.

The digital display is pretty small, but other than that. Love it.

Not my thing. Prefer my G-100 ani digi. It’s not trying to be something else and the digital display is actually useful.

It's not "the classic G-shock", but its main legibility is unparallelled. It's big, but there are smaller options. The small display is small - seek positive ones if you can.

I've had it canoeing and the features came very handy. Don't knock it until you've tried knocking it about!

Yeah I usually hear a lot of complaints about the legibility, usually about the small screen. But for me it is actually my most legible watch to read(I am a recent convert to analog this has been my gateway😅). The screen is small but I mostly just use the screen for the date anyway and it's at least bigger than a typical date window. Plus I really don't seem to ever need the screen I just view it as an analog watch with a neet digital date window and alarm and world time swapping functionality that I use with the app🤷. So, I really never even use the screen except for the date. And other than the screen the analog display is so much more legible for me than my digitals. I always thought when people refer to the viewing angle problem with digitals that it was a bit of overanalyzing. But it is actually really nice being able to just read the time from weird angles😅. Like driving I don't even lift my hand I can just glance at my watch and see it. Sounds silly to say but I do somehow appreciate that convince after using digitals for so long😂

This is well-said – I mostly agree with what you write here. For me, it has been my entry-point into G-Shocks (thät I've always avoided) because I like the size, fit, handset, analog capability plus the fact thät this G-Shock is so different from the rest of its siblings.
