Oris ProPilot X vs. Formex Essence 39

Hi all,

I know it might sound like an unusual comparison and they come at different price ranges, but which one would you choose (and why?) between the two for an everyday use, spanning from the occasional sea/pool dive to a possible suit & tie at the office?

Thanks a lot in advance for your hints!

You get a lot more watch with the Formex. Most of what the Oris brings is a name... Particularly if you rotate through your watches over longer than a 5 day period.

·

Go Formex - so much value for money! The Oris is a fantastic watch, but the Formex is a banger of a watch for a great price!

·

Oris. Not even close.

Brand, movement, heritage and imho just looks so much classier.

The Formex I'm sure is a good watch, but it does have that microbrand look about it, not sure about the gimmicky suspension system. I don't mind the name myself, but that is another area that often gets criticism.

Pay the extra & get the Oris 👍🏻

·

I'm not a fan of Oris' flat dial. On the other hand, I'm very curious about Formex' spring-loaded case.

(Opposite case with the divers, though: Divers 65 for me wins over the Reef.)

·

Formex looks better but oris has the better movement prolly

·

Interesting dilemma. Personally I would go with Formex but if you care about heritage, then Oris. To be frank, most people wouldn't know the difference between the two anyways. They'd ask "Is that a Rolex?"😂

The Oris is $4600, has an in-house movement, titanium case and a 10 year warranty. The Formex costs under $2000, uses a Selitta, has the Formex suspension and micro adjust systems.

I wrote all that because these watches aren’t competitors — far from it — and they’re not meant to be. The decision here imo comes down to your wallet.

I would skip the Oris personally and buy an IWC Mark XX which you should be able to get discounted. Otherwise, save the money and buy a Formex.

The Oris but the no inhouse movment, is a sellita or a ETA great calibre and any good watchmaker you trust can provide maintenance and repair

What makes you think the Mark XX should be discounted? Asking for my wallet…

·

Propilot X gray dial if it’s not of monetary concern.

I walked into a dealer in Key West. He was prepared to give a 10 percent discount without any real negotiation.

The Oris is a fine watch, but if I have 4k+ to spend on a watch it wouldn't even be considered for me. You can buy lightly used Omegas and Grand Seikos for that money. The Formex on the other hand is an insane value. Yes, it's a Sellita SW200 movement, but it's COSC and very nicely decorated. I have the Essence 39 and the fit and finish punches wayyy above it's $1500 pricepoint. This watch would easily be $2500-3000 if it was from one of the large Swiss brands.

Outstanding!

I say the Formex. It's a more unique watch in my opinion with alot of modern tech incorporated into it. Plus, since it's half the price, get you the Formex and a Pointer-Date.

·

I have a formex and used to have the regular fay date pro pilot. I love the formex and the oris never really bonded with me. It was well made it just didn't seem special.

·

Def get the oris!

·

Both are nice but I prefer the Oris. It has a more interesting bezel and crown and overall styling for me. I also prefer the hand set and it’s 5 day movement is great. I also like the bracelet and clasp on this more.

·

Trick question, I would change the Oris for a Fortis and the Formex for a Monta.

·

Formex for sure. The Oris has less interesting dial

·

Formex. imo it looks better and they now regulate some of their watches to cosc standards for under 2 grand which is really nice. while the movement in the pro pilot is better, i agree with others above i don't think most people will know oris anymore than they would know formex. Not to mention if you need it serviced in the future the sellita in the formex should give you options to go to a lot of places for repair. The oris will probably have to go straight back to oris.

·

I like both! Though different dial colors for me. The pink/Salmon pro pilot looks insane and different in just the right way. I tried on a grey dial recently and loved the bracelet and case, but the grey dial was very bland.

The essence looks great too!
