Pay attention to your surroundings. Like ACTUAL pay attention, don't be just zoning out, make eye contact and watch people. Ambush predators hate being observed.
Don't go to the dive bar/strip club combo with the Gold LE Daytona at 0200.
If the streets get real empty all of a sudden leave post haste.
No watch is worth your loved ones or your life.
If the bad guys plan to harm your loved ones or you anyway, eliminate their threat with extreme prejudice, utilizing whatever tools are at hand.

I'd say it mostly depends on the watch. People are more likely to notice/target your Rolex GMT than your IWC Type XX.
If you're wearing something "hyped" or popular enough to be known by non watch people, the risk goes up.
I'd also say if you're worried enough to ask the question, maybe stick to the affordables for now and see how you feel / how it goes.

My choice for this dilemma, but even this can and does draw attention.
Just don't flex unnecessarily. Be smart about your surroundings.
