The more seedy side of watch collecting...

You would think that a respectable auction house as Phillips would hold the highest standards about what they sell. Well, think again... Some very dodgy things going on here!

Read the article and ask yourself: would you buy anything from them?

It is amazing that they caught the perpetrators!!! I mean, it was an inside job... and aren't they always?

Now, if I were one of those employees, the moment Omega itself purchased the watch, I would have sh*t my pants. I mean, had a private individual purchased the watch, there is ZERO chance that individual would have ever discovered the fraud. Omega itself... that's a different story.

I've got to imagine that some nontrivial percentage of historic items selling through any auction house has gotta be a fake / forgery!

To be fair it took even Omega 2 years to find out, if the people who did it were smart they're long out of the country enjoying retirement in some Caribbean tax haven.

Asjemenou..

And no, I wouldn't buy from them, but that's because my pockets aren't quite deep enough. ;)

Sadly (some) auction houses and watch companies care more about profit over everything else nowadays.

My personal favourite is when PP launched the “final” edition of the 5711 (dark green dial), then proceeded to launch the Tiffany blue and then finally re-released it in the form of 5811.
