Breitling Top Time Deux - Sugess Chrono

Every now and then I see the Sugess Chrono pop up on Amazon as a suggested buy and I must say it looks really nice for sub $300.  What I didnt realize was that its a carbon copy of the Breitling Top Time Deux, which (correct me if Im wrong) is a limited edition of 1,500 only.  So the chances of running into one can be rare in person.  After I discovered this, it really turned me away from the Sugess.  I don't think anyone will ever ask "hey is that a top time?" but would it be weird walking around with something that is soo homagy?  Like too homagy?  Its like having a fake Cartier Santos...its a very specific design.

Yeah, I am a big fan of the Deus Top Time LE and was still surprised to see this homage from Sugess. I wouldn’t have pegged the original to be a target for an homage in the first place.

While I don’t think the Deus Top Time and it’s design is as synonymous as a Rolex Submariner (or even Breitling Navitimer) for me to worry about the potential of others mistaking it… I would definitely be in my own head about it considering how much of a carbon copy it really does appear to be.

right??? Its almost less on the watch and more of a mental irk.   For some reason I almost feel more comfortable with an homage rolex because its so common.  I dunno haha

Time to realize that this whole industry is just one watch company stealing(Homage) ideas from another in order to design their next watch.  There are very few new good ideas in watches.  Sugess doesn't do a half bad job building a value watch.

That’s exactly what turned me off about this one too so I got the blue version of it

Yea I was searching other colors to see which was more original to suges, how do you like the watch?

Design inspiration is great!  For instance, the CW C63 and Tudor BB Pro are both heavily inspired by the Rolex Explorer II.

But…The Tudor and C63 are very different watches. The only difference between the Breitling and the Sugess is the branding. Big difference!

There are homages...and then there are direct flagrant rip-offs.

Methinks this one falls into the latter category. While it is attractive because it's based on a classic design, it screams I cannot afford the real thing so I'm wearing this blatant copy. And that might be OK if you just want the look and the design. The insides of these watches are really dreck though with that terrible Seagull ST19 movement. If you only occasionally use the chronograph you are probably fine, anything else and be prepared for failure.

I was really fortunate to be able to pick up one of the super limited versions of the Top Time that was made for the Cervo resort in Switzerland. You could only purchase the watch at the resort and they only made 54 of them. I tracked down the last one that was left at the resort gift shop. My problem was that I was in the USA in Covid lockdown and there was no chance to get to that resort. Solution: I convinced them to sell it to me. Problem: they would not ship it out of Switzerland. Solution: one of my colleagues agreed to have it shipped to his home in Switzerland. Then I waited almost two years until we could travel again and now it's finally in my possession since September when I saw my colleague. Such a beautiful watch...

I really like the watch and have had it for about a year so I can’t say a lot about long term stuff. But it’s holding up perfectly the movement runs with +6 secs a day and looks awesome. I agree the watch is heavily inspired by the Breitling but honestly saying it’s a blatant rip off or fake is wrong and shaming anyone for not being able to afford a 8k watch is just gatekeeping and wrong
