Omega Planet Ocean 39.5

I was traveling for work a few months ago and walked into an Omega boutique and tried on this Planet Ocean 39.5. I have been obsessed ever since.

I have tiny wrists and wear a 36 mm Explorer and 38 mm Luminox day-to-day. I never saw myself wearing a typical diver (Submariner, Seamaster, etc) because the lugs are as long as my wrist is wide. Honestly, most women have largest wrists than me. Before trying on this PO I wasn’t aware Omega made a diver smaller than 42 mm so I was surprised when the salesman put it on my wrist and the lugs didn’t protrude past my bones on each side. I’ve wanted a diver for a while but, again, there weren’t any that fit my wrist and my eye. I haven’t tried on the Tudor Pelagos 39 or BB54 so I’m not ruling them out as contenders.

If you’ve got any experience with the Planet Ocean, BB54 or Pelagos 39 I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions.

Thanks in advance!

I agree with you. I was in an Omega boutique on vacation and they had the 75th anniversary edition Planet Ocean. I tried it on and loved it. After that, the SMP 300 just felt cheap. The Planet Ocean immediately went on my radar if I ever add another diver. I’d also like to hear owner feedback!

It wears big, like any diver, but it looks proportionate for your wrist. 👍

I would still try the Pelagos 39 in person before committing, because the superior bracelet and titanium weight could make a big difference in the wearing experience.

Although aesthetically I prefer the more modern design language of Omega watches, so I would go for this PO or wait for a new mid-size SMP300 to come maybe in the future.

I haven’t seen the 75th in person yet so I can’t judge it too harshly, but I think I like the black dial and exhibition caseback on the standard issue. That said, I do really appreciate the entire 75th line and how the dials get darker as the watches get deeper ratings.

I definitely want to try on a few Tudors before making any decisions. Thanks!

I didn’t think much of it until I saw it in person. It’s a rich, deep blue dial and the lighter blue bezel really compliments the dial. The Poseidon engraved caseback is something beautiful!

My Tudor sales pro will get upset with me but the Omega PO is my choice over any of the divers she sells including the Pelagos which I own already. I prefer larger cases since oddly, my wife and two daughters despite regular sized wrists can easily wear my gents timepieces excluding the 46, 48mm iterations. I intend to source a ceramic PO with GMT function after I save for a few years.

The PO is a great size but a little top heavy depending on the strap.

If you are looking at trying the pelagos 39 also try the FXD as depending on your wrist shape it can be a better fit.

You should go for it!! I have the Planet Ocean but it is a large watch..Here it is side by side with with a regular SeaMaster. I like it but I have larger wrists. A smaller version would be great for alot of folks . Thanks for the tip.

Do it,go for the PO … looks good on you.👍💯

The 39.5mm PO is very nice. It’s a bit chunky and heavy, but hides its thickness well. I like the bracelet, and the tool-less micro adjust always allows for a good fit to help balance the weight.

Here is the 43mm PO. I don’t have a big wrist but 39mm felt small to me so I decided to go with 43mm. It is a big watch but because it is my daily wearer, I got used to it. I really love the watch.

There is no universe where 1) the PO isn't a great watch outright and great looking 2) snowflake hands aren't ugly and Tudor aren't too similar in looks to a Rolex. Get the PO if it's in your budget. The black and orange one is one of my grail watches.

Of the 3 listed, the PO is my top choice. Looks great on you. Happy hunting 🤙

I am with you on this. My wrist is ~6.75 and I tried on the PO 39.5 and 43.5 at the boutique a couple of weeks ago. The 39 fit my wrist perfectly but the dial looks small and cramped IMO. The 43.5 fit my wrist almost as well and but looked better and less cramped. I typically like my divers big and bold and the 39 looked "dainty" according to my non-watch-loving wife. I also love the independent hour hand of the bigger version.

that being said, before i pull the trigger on a PO, i'll need to try both on in person (again).

One consideration i would like to ignore but find it difficult is resale value - the trends in watches these days is smaller is better. As such, resale of the 43.5 would likely take a bigger hit than the 39.5.

My wrist is 6.6 and yes that 39mm dial still looks small. I was at the AD trying on the BlackBay 58 and the Spirit Zulu time both at 39mm and they both look too small for me.

Maybe because all watches in my collection are 40mm and up and I am used to wearing bigger watches. I guess I will never follow the smaller trend.

Yes you should definitely try both on again to be sure and make a decision based on what you really like. Omega's resale value isn't that great unless it is a limited edition. Good luck!
