Amazon Basics Basic Watch

So, when I was trying to find a specific Timex that I couldn't remember the reference for, I randomly saw that Amazon has a line of watches under their Basics brand.

They kind of look like Easy Reader copies in five different colorways. From the specs, it's got:

  • 100 ft water resistance

  • Mineral crystal

  • 42mm case

  • Date window

  • Faux leather strap

  • Quartz (guessing from price, though no movement details are listed)

  • $19 price tag

To me this looks like a generic white label type watch. The main thing I found deceptive is the watch face listing "Water 100 Resist." Normally, with the exception of a couple of American brands, I assume the measurement is in meters, but this one required to search the specifics to find the 100 ft (30m) rating.

I believe this is purposely deceptive because they don't list the unit of measure. The American brands that use feet over meters list feet on the watches.

I probably wouldn't get one of these, unless I was doing a review or just needed a throw away that I didn't care about. Still, I think a Casio would easily be better.

Anyway, just something I found surprising. Have any of you guys seen one of these in person or own one? What are your thoughts?

In two words: Ugly & undesirable. I feel no attraction, enthusiasm, or even polite curiosity about this ät all – just "ew".

Äs you noted, the dial is totally bland & forgettable, the date window is än unbelievable eyesore/cavity on the (ugly) dial, änd no other dimension or line of the case draws in the eye. It' just elephant-butt ugly. Nope

I have quite a few of these. When I buy auction lots they have a tendency to have some in the lot. They don't look too bad in person. They are presentable but the straps are garbage. They look as if they split, crack and fall apart after wearing it a couple of times. They come with the cheap Miyota movement. The same movement as in my #spaghettiscameti. It's not a bad movement but I say cheap as in cost. It is the same movement that is put in many other cheap watches. It does the job.

Id buy one if it was an IWC. 😋

Good for a beater I suppose but for cost I'd probably still take a timex or casio 🤷

Only seen online. I'd assume they live up to the Basics name. It's a functional device with inoffensive style and nothing special whatsoever. It's surely some cruddy plated pot metal case that needs a gentle life to age well. Like the Walmart George watches, I'd be tempted to try them out if they weren't so big.
