Waltham on Gyeongseong Creatures (Netflix)

Somewhat of an odd shoutout, in the beginning scenes of Gyeongseong Creatures, a Waltham watch appears on screen is given an oddly large amount of shoutouts and screen time including a close up shot. It is also worn by none other than the protagonist of the show.

It looks pretty period correct with the typeface and the acrylic looking crystal, and from what I can tell it does look like it probably went through a lot of refurbishing to get it to look good as it does on the show.

Regardless I found it interesting that they chose Waltham out of all the big name ex-American watch makers, especially as I feel like modern Hamilton would have more than happily marketed a watch if given the opportunity. (As far as I understand, Waltham currently is in a similar situation to Smith watches).

Also as the setting of the show is 1945, I was wondering if that piece would be period correct after all- Waltham was not producing watches and providing for the military for WWII.

Regardless, it was an unexpected geekout opportunity for me.

A gold/gold plated/coloured Waltham watch in 1945? Yeah, that sounds like your protagonist was flexing with his American watch.

Oh nice catch 👍🏽I recently watched Tokyo Vice. Soo many watch sightings and they discuss them a little bit too. 🍻

He is first shown as a Gatsby-esque character, who owns a pawn shop so makes sense.

I need to watch that some day too!

My father stopped wearing the watch he bought in 1946 in 1998, so “period correct” could cover decades. BTW, it never looked out of place, though sported patina and wear.

Awesome. 50 years of wear history on any watch is already cool, even more cool assuming your father's watch is probably dressy in nature.

I guess I meant that the watch could not possibly have been produced in the 40s when the company was providing for the military, but I don't know the exact history. The character above is an owner of a pawn shop so the watch could be from the 30s being sold off 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nothing wrong with Kdramas... usually. Interesting, I clearly haven't watched enough of them recently to recognize watches were prominent in them!

I'll have to give that one a viewing. I never seem to have time the past few years. 🤣
