Service 6r15 after 10 years?

Hi Seiko experts,

My SARB017 is nearly 10 years old now and is keeping good time. However, it was regulated by the previous owner and I'm not sure he knew what he was doing.

Currently it's running around +5spd with a beat error of 3ms and amplitude of only around 200°. I've heard that these movements are known to have a low amplitude.

Anyone have any experience with servicing these movements?

Is this a reason to have it serviced or should I wait a while?

That amplitude does seam pretty low, should be around 250 to 270 when new . If the amplitude drops it can effect the timekeeping, maybe the previous owner regulated it for that reason. Probably at the point where it needs a service, although you could leave it longer until the timekeeping drops off

Those movements are hard to find. Easier to replace with new.

I’d service it. 200 amplitude is low even for an old Seiko. Most of the time if you’re at 250 and up you’re in good shape. 230 is low but for an older Seiko seems to be common. 200 is very low and the beat error os rather high. Seiko USA was charging $265 for a full service on a 6R last time I checked. Definitely worth it if you plan on keeping the watch long term.

Nice, but I'd rather keep the 6r15 original, than putting an NH in. So probably service rather than replace in this case

Okay, will see what my local watchmaker charges, hopefully not an arm and a leg 🙈

It's the same movement just like the 4R35 is the same as NH35.

Why not service it? I had my sarb017 serviced my Seiko US for about $250 total a few years ago. Still running well. Turnaround was about a month.

You do hear that "these Seiko's run for decades without needing a service..." quite a lot. Wondering if there's any truth to it.

Yeah I’m not sure if those stories are taking into account amplitude and timekeeping. Mine started to lose about 45 seconds a day after 8 years. It was a gift from my wife so I gladly paid the Seiko service. The service from Seiko was also not a nightmare like the internet stories make you believe. Easy payment and quick turnaround.

Yeah fair enough.

I'm not sure if the service center here in Germany is like the system you have... As far as I have seen up until now, Seiko has contract watchmakers around the place that will service for you. But I might have to do some more research on that

That’s a lovely watch. 10 years old and it’s still keeping better time than the 6R35 in mine. If you don’t mind me asking, where did you get the bracelet from. I’m looking for an Oyster style bracelet and the only one I’ve come across so far is on Strapcode. But the end links on that don’t actually look like they fit flush with the lugs.

The bracelet is a Strapcode bracelet, with pseudo-female endlinks, a huge improvement from the old Strapocode bracelet with male endlinks.... Got it from Amazon, though and not sure if it's the standard one
