My run-of-the-mill "how I got into watches" post

I imagine everyone on WC makes this post at some point, so here's mine. ๐Ÿ˜œ

I have a G-Shock that I wore daily for years, but I didn't become fascinated with watches until about a couple of years ago. What sparked my interest? A random YouTube video, and it wasn't a trending video from one of the well-known watch YouTubers. It was this random clip from Joe Rogan's podcast that showed up on my feed one day.ย

Watched it once and forgot about it, but then later on for some reason, I had this clip on repeat. Before I knew it, I was deep down the rabbit hole of watches content. Got my Seiko 5 soon after. Now, here I am. That's all.ย

Would love to read some of your stories about how you got into this. Thanks for reading.ย

I always liked watches growing up. I got a $36 g shock from Costco as a gift from my parents in elementary school and thought it was so cool. Itโ€™s still going strong ~15 years later.ย

I stopped wearing watches until high school when an aunt got me a Coach quartz watch. Itโ€™s battery died within that year and I started wearing a Seiko solar diver my dad wasnโ€™t wearing anymore. I got a compliment from a stranger for my โ€œSeiko diver.โ€

I didnโ€™t know what he meant my diver. I didnโ€™t know about divers. I didnโ€˜t even know mechanical watches were still a thing. I got home and looked them up. Sure enough I went down the rabbit hole of this hobby.ย

I got an Orient Curator as my first mechanical then a Seiko SARB 035. These carried me through undergrad. My Stowa Flieger 36 is carrying me through grad school.ย

I told myself I wouldnโ€™t get another watch until Iโ€™m done and more financially set. That probably means no more watches for at least 5 years, which Iโ€™m ok with.

To the mechanic who complimented my Seiko diverโ€ฆ your kindness has cursed me.

Lucky enough to have parents that would buy me inexpensive watches when I was a kid. With allowance and eventually job would buy myself my own watch, sub 20 buck casio. Of course I would break them all the time, so I'd go to target to buy one, but then the stores near me stopped carrying watches. Wtf. I didn't drive then, or refused to go outta my way to buy something. Finally caved and got myself a g shock online, 60 bucks, an outrageous price for a watch. Realize I can't break it, will be the only watch I need. Proceed to buy more watches.
