I always liked watches growing up. I got a $36 g shock from Costco as a gift from my parents in elementary school and thought it was so cool. It’s still going strong ~15 years later.
I stopped wearing watches until high school when an aunt got me a Coach quartz watch. It’s battery died within that year and I started wearing a Seiko solar diver my dad wasn’t wearing anymore. I got a compliment from a stranger for my “Seiko diver.”
I didn’t know what he meant my diver. I didn’t know about divers. I didn‘t even know mechanical watches were still a thing. I got home and looked them up. Sure enough I went down the rabbit hole of this hobby.
I got an Orient Curator as my first mechanical then a Seiko SARB 035. These carried me through undergrad. My Stowa Flieger 36 is carrying me through grad school.
I told myself I wouldn’t get another watch until I’m done and more financially set. That probably means no more watches for at least 5 years, which I’m ok with.
To the mechanic who complimented my Seiko diver… your kindness has cursed me.
