What are your thoughts on Quartz?

Hey guys,

I wonder how you think about Quartz vs Automatic?

Quartz is great for accuracy and requires little maintenance outside of a battery change. Overall, I think it's a better option. If a watch is available in both quartz and mechanical, I'll choose quartz every time.

·

I like them both. Quartz is accurate, always ready to go. However, I don’t like the tick. So I usually go for the small seconds hand (chronographs have them too), or no seconds hand at all.

Auto/Mechanicals have a beating soul. I love their sweeping motion. I also enjoy listening to the movement.

Quartz watches are watches. If you like the look, wear them. I clearly have a few. Accuracy is better. Cases are thinner.

Automatics or manual wind are something different. Special. More complicated. Harder to make. Requires more precision in the handling of the various parts. Art and engineering all wrapped up in one.

·

I love quartz. The grab and go, high accuracy. It can be got for $20 or $20,000. Low maintenence costs. About half my watches are quartz. Don't get me wrong, automatic is great too. They're just part of a whole collection and I think most of us have both

Quartz comes across as a dirty word to some, but it's really about your preference. Both types have their advantages and disadvantages, just be sure to get what appeals to you.

·

In my opinion, both has its perks. While my daily wear is automatic, my dedicated dress watch is actually a Casio quartz MTP E173l and some people think I'm strange because of it 😂

·

There’s a place in this world for all types of movements.

·

Mechanical is kind of like a painting to quartz's photograph. Both are great, but some times people want paintings of something, and other times they'll want photographs, for all kinds of reasons.

·

I'll be honest.....quartz watches don't do anything for me....

·

Both are amazing, and well suited for what they do. For me, it's a "right tool for the right job" thing. For work, I need precision, accuracy and high magnetic resistance..so a high-precision quartz is a no brainer. For my relaxed days were timing doesn't matter too much, or I'm feeling nostalgic, Auto.

An affordable quartz/digital beater is assumed to be a given here :-)

I feel as long as you're not expecting Qtz accuracy from your Auto, or the purely subjective Auto "charm" from your Qtz, you're fine.

Love quartz movements, especially solar-powered quartz movements!

·

First thought is Tech:

The Tech of a Quartz watch is clearly superior = accuracy that is hard to beat, simple to build & can be digital, analog display or both. Solar power gives the user a very long lasting durable timepiece without the necessity of a battery change. A Quartz timepiece can even be hidden in a cell phone.

The reality of technological advances today: All watches are obsolete because that Quartz watch now resides in a phone, laptop, vehicle display etc.

Watch Lovers = All movements are cool because watches are cool. Watches are jewelry with a function. They aren't as utilitarian as a medical alert bracelet. Not as badass as brass knuckles. Not as Rat Packish as a pinky ring and not as sexy as a belly button ring (on the right person IMO) watches are Toolry

All this to say: Quartz watches are as cool as Mechanical, Spring Drive or Automatic. It's why I own something in every movement

Postscript I do want me a Jetstar badly!

·

If I like the watch I don't mind quartz at all

·

I like certain quartz from Citizen, Seiko, or Victorinox in sport models and/or resin light weight cases. Quartz, aside from Spring Drive or high best movements, in metal GADA or Dress pieces I am less keen on - unless there is no seconds hand. Quartz preferences definitely show all of our quirks and variations as collectors.

·

I own and enjoy both mechanical and quartz watches, but for grab-and-go, day to day wear, 90% of the time, I'm reaching for one of my quartz pieces; particularly on weekdays 😀 👍

·

Love it, fantastic!

Love automatics too!

It's ok to love & enjoy both. 🤗

·

Quartz is a great mineral, and a very underrated gemstone.

Let’s hold hands and sing kumbaya (unless you’re wearing a fake watch right now)

I am definitely a wear what makes you happy person.

But.. to me, the detail and complication of an automatic mechanical watch are what makes them so amazing. I love display backs to show off the goods if/when I desire to look or show. I like open hearts and skeletons as well.

While there is an unmistakable benefit to the accuracy of a quartz, to me the magic just isn't there. Open it up and you're looking at (what feels to me) cheap and easy electronics that will never stand the test of time. Sure, they're accurate and you don't have to wind them.. but..

There is so much more to a watch than telling the time. I don't need that, I have that. What I want and need is an amazing, magical, complicated piece of mechanical engineering the size of a quarter strapped to my wrist. It's wonderful and amazing and I love it!

To be fair, I have a couple quartz watches. I inherited or was gifted them. I bought an amazing Kinetic from a fellow Cruncher, and I love it. I will probably buy another quartz before I die because I like the way it looks and they're cheaper. But they just don't have that magic and so will always come in a distant second to my automatics and mechanicals.

Thanks guys for the awesome responses. I have to admit that I am a bit biased towards automatic. For the craftsmanship and long lasting life span. But some of the quartz are absolutely beautiful. The short life span is annoying, but who might still care about that after 20 years
