Success in winding someone into the hobby?

I’ve been into watches most of my life - from my first green Timex in elementary school, to a white G-shock in high school, to buying a few sub-$50 affordable watches in my college years. I didn’t know it was an actual hobby for people until a few years ago. And with communities like these and online resources, my knowledge of horology grew. And over the past few years, I’ve been through many iterations of taste changes and selection of the “core collection” that we all chase the idea of.

Over the years, I’ve had conversations with friends and family who have shown interest in the topic, but not as a hobby for themselves. The biggest influence naturally I’ve had is on my wife.

Starting with buying her a Tissot as a wedding watch, reading stories from “a man and his watch” before bed, and always asking her opinion about a new strap, my influence has finally rubbed off on her. In this picture is the first watch she’s bought for herself! As an added bonus, it’s her first automatic watch. Shortly after, I bought her a mechanical Timex as a present, and she prefers to wear it on an aftermarket NATO.

What are your experiences in trying/getting someone into the hobby?

Plot twist, that’s her arm with the explorer and that’s mine with the pink cocktail… haha just kidding.

She hasn’t gotten gutsy enough to borrow any of my watches yet 😅

I don’t try to get anyone into this hobby. I don’t wish this addiction on anyone…

I never tried or intended to have my interest rub off on anyone. And my wife is totally not into it though thankful she lets me indulge 😜

I prefer to keep my friends.

My wife has appropriated my favourite watch, my 1958 Omega Seamaster dress watch - I’ll ‘borrow’ it back and post a piccy!

A few years back I persuaded a friend of mine to buy his first mechanical watch. My buddy works in finance, but never spends money on himself (literally, he is one of the most generous guys I know). Life had given him a bit of a beating, and he needed to give himself some TLC. We both went to the AD together, having got drunk beforehand, and he walked out with a JLC ultra thin on his wrist: not bad for your first watch. Fast forward, and today his pride and joy is a Vaceron Constantain Overseas. Gotta feel proud of that one!

That’s a great story! Hope life’s been treating him better lately too. And I’m sure now he’ll look back on the watch and remember having had an amazing friend above anything else
