Feedback on Mechaquartz movement please.

Hi all,

I’m looking to put a movement into my new Chronograph series that I’ll be launching soon. Swiss movements are too expensive for our little brand to afford right now, so we have been given the option of using the Seiko VK63. Before I commit to it, I wanted to gauge y’alls opinions and critiques on it if any.

thanks!

Matteo.

Can't really go wrong with the VK movement. Look forward to sneaking a peak at what you got going!!

I have no experience with mechaquartz, but definitely would not be deterred from buying a watch because of it. I've only ever heard good things.

I don't know if it's just me, but I've only had issues with the VK series.  The first watch I had had the chrono seconds disconnect from the rest of the hands and the 2nd had an issue where upon resetting the chrono hand, the minute hand would snap forward about a third of a minute.  That genuinely could be just bad luck on my part but figured I'd share.  I'll be honest though; I'd be willing to give it one more shot if the design was intriguing enough to me.

Had a Furlan Marri with the VK movement for a short while and I love how close it comes to appearing like a mechanical movement.

I'm all in favor of them as they silence that bogus nitpick about the second hand not hitting index marks.

That’s very interesting.
It’s weird how some people have the same issues over and over with a Watch. It makes me wonder if some individuals simply give off a stronger magnetic field or similarwhich messes with the Watch…I read it somewhere years ago, but I’m not saying that’s your case.
The design I’m going with is similar to the blue faced Omega Speedmaster.

That very well could be. I'm not at all stating that the VK series has inherent issues or anything but did want to give my experience.  I was able to find one other individual who experienced the "jumping" minute hand on reset on WUS but they also weren't able to resolve it. My guess is I just had bad luck twice on QC with how the hands were set on both watches.

Seiko VK movements have two issues that should be considered.

  1. It's impossible to adjust the chrono hand. The chrono part of the movement is mechanical and can't be adjusted by pushing a button combination like it's done on pure quartz chronos.
  2. You can't get rid of the 24Hr indicator. This useless complication is present on almost every VVK movement and it's impossible to make it run independently from the main hands to track a second time zone. It's truly useless.

Yeah, the installation instructions for a VK63 explicitly call out for letting the chrono run, resetting it, and then installing the chrono hand in the 12 o'clock position. No adjustments afterwards.

And yes, the 24 hour indicator for when you wake up in a dark hotel room in Vegas ... very useful. 😁

But my VK63 hasn't given me any trouble, so far, and it is a widely-used movement. I'm still tempted to do VK63 build just for the heck of it.
