Originally from England, lived in the US for the past 20 years. Lifelong lover of watches, very recent lover of watchmaking as a hobby and beginner collector of attainable watches
I've loved watches since childhood, but never owned anything that special or expensive, usually opting for Swatches and Timex's. It's only after wearing smart watches for the better part of the last ten years that I decided to get more serious about watches and recently got my first ever mechanical watches, a Lorier Hyperion. I have a bunch more watches in my sights, but plan to take my time... if I can be disciplined enough! :)
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
I'm not 100% on the brand and model, but I got my first watch in Elementary school, and it had a dial that changed colors like a Kaleidescope as the seconds changed. From some googling I think it might have been a Timex Color Flicks https://www.facebook.com/ShoppeVintage/videos/vintage-1969-timex-color-flicks-pakterkrauss-timex-timexwatch-vintagetimex-timex/756256835141023/
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
Not yet, but that's my goal. I spend a lot of time searching online for classic watches in need of (light!) repair and restoration.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Do your research but follow your gut. Pick what you love, not what you think other people will like or is most likely to appreciate in value. Take your time. If you really want a watch, you'll really want it a week or a month from now. If after that time has passed and you don't really want it anymore then it wasn't meant to be.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Falling in love with a lot of the microbrands out there creating amazing watches in the $500-$1000 range. A few that jump to mind are Lorier, Sternglas, Unimatic, Brew, Autodromo and Studio Underdog. Also love the heritage and style of classic Seiko's.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Not sure I have an answer for this yet, but I am drawn to the Speedmaster because of the connection to the space program.
