I am a lover of mechanical timepieces, from both affordable and luxury brands. I collect mainly Seiko Prospex divers and Omega chronographs. I love Rolex and Patek Philippe as well but at present, they are out of my price range. I love the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, and all manual wind chronographs.
I am glad that I found this community. I look forward to talking to other like-minded collectors, about our collections. My SOTC is in the above pictu...
It depends on how much money you are making. If you have the money sitting in the bank, then pay cash. If you want to put it on a credit card, that is fine, as long as you can pay it back quickly. You do not want to buy a watch that is going to take years to pay back and risk your otherwise good credit rating. I only pay cash, unless I am buying a cheaper watch through Afterpay, where you pay in 4 installments. This is a good option for watches up to 2-3k, but I would not buy anything dearer than that. Anything more expensive, just save the cash, and buy when ready.
Here in Australia, I have only heard of it happening once. Normally people do not notice what you are wearing unless you are an enthusiast or watch spotter. A lot of people have stopped wearing watches altogether. I reckon this is stupid because you are always having to go into your pocket to check the time. It only takes a split second to look down at your watch and you do not have the inconvenience of having to find your phone all of the time. This is the probable reason why people are still buying watches, for convenience and a piece of jewellery all roled up into one.
Luxury is all about brands, reputation, and creating desire through clever marketing campaigns. You do not need to spend crazy amounts of money on quality timepieces. There are many choices within Citizen and Seiko that are really good value for money. Also if you want to buy Swiss, Tissot, Longines, and others are good value for money on the second hand market
Get yourself a Seiko Sumo. you can pick one of these up for around $700 AUD. It is tough, durable, and accurate. I have the green version, but if you want just one, then maybe the black dial version could be for you. You can wear that watch anywhere either with a suit, or a t-shirt and shorts.
The only thing you are missing is a proper mechanical chronograph. A Speedmaster Moonwatch would fill that void. I would put that g shock in your drawer and not in the watch box. it cheapens all the rest of your watches. It looks like it came out of a cereal box. I love g shocks and have several myself, but I would never put them into the same box as my good watches.
