JQuinn introduction

Hi watch fam,

I’m new to watch collecting, and while searching for advice, I found a dearth of information regarding basic questions, like “why can’t I buy certain Seikos direct from the manufacturer? How do I know I am getting a full-grain vegetable-tanned leather strap from a quality brand like Wickett & Craig? Why does everyone dislike the Seiko bracelets, and in what ways, if any, are the sub-$100 bracelets online better?” Answers to these questions seem unspoken in the watch community, and brands don't provide much support. I'm thrilled to find Watch Crunch, where members have all the answers.

I got into watch collecting after my Nordgreen developed condensation inside the crystal. I was appalled by the customer service, who seemed to blame me even after I verified I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary with the watch. I asked my Dad for advice on watch brands because he bought himself his first and last watch in his 20s, a 1983 Rolex Datejust with a custom flat bezel and white dial. He said Seiko was what I wanted; I started my research and learned about everything from leather manufacturing to modding, movements, case finishing, and low-temperature testing.

Right now, I’m enjoying my Seiko Alpinist, the same as the one photographed by gshocksocal above, on a vegetable-tanned leather strap from FinWatchStraps on Etsy.

Happy watching,

John

Don’t worry, I went through the usual Macy’s watches, Skagen and Casio, first, but I wouldn’t label myself a collector during those days.😜
