Collection spotlight: Bering - The one that started it all!

On this second instalment of my collection spotlight, I present you my Bering watch. It's not my first watch, but it's the one that made me get into the hobby.

I got it as a gift from my parents around 7-8 years ago. It's a beautiful ceramic and steel piece with an integrated bracelet made of both materials as well. The watch is super thin and the dial is pretty intricate when you look at it closely. Until last summer, it was the only watch I wore, day after day.

Now why did it get me into the hobby? It's not because it's a beautiful and seemingly well-made watch that's very comfortable to wear. It's because the battery would die every 6 to 8 months, which is an annoyance in itself, but I'd bring it to an AD (a jeweller) to change it (warranty and everything), and they were never able to open it so they'd send it to a watchmaker, I'd lose the watch for 3 weeks, pay double what a normal battery change would be, and get it back with more scratches on the back every time. I went to see a watchmaker directly last time and it was a much faster and enjoyable process. He even told me there was a big gunk of skin grease on the movement from the previous battery change...

All that lead me to research if there was still watches made with no batteries, only a good ol' "crank" to make it work. Turns out they still exist, and there's a whole community and industry built around them! 😅 I fell down the rabbit hole pretty quickly thanks to youtube, and learned to like quartz watches again while still enjoying the heritage and craftsmanship that goes into mechanical ones.

In the next collection spotlights, I'll talk about all my new acquisitions and highlight my journey through this rodent crater!

Bering is propably one of the very few "fashion brands" I do consider.

We should know, that the founder of Bering is a watch enthusiast and you can recognize it whrn you check the details of their watches.

So it's more like 70% fashion 30% watch enthusiat brand.

I actually wish some of the high reputated watch brands would be little bit more fashionable.

I also respect how they keep their own ideals for design to look different.

  • Minimalistic

  • Arctic

  • Slim

They use great materials and reliable movements from Seiko.

I once tryed one of their watches and was really surprized how well it sits on my wrist and it looked damn good.

I expecting to add one into my collection.
