Hard choices

My collection of watches recently surpassed 40. That's a lot of watches, and it creates a problem every morning... What watch to wear? Of course, one has favorites, but truthfully, I have at least 15 that I regard on a par (more or less), and another 15 that I like just slightly less. I try to give wrist time to all of them, really. That does leave me wishing there were more days in the week, or feeling guilty for wearing a watch for 2 or more days in a row. I will usually do that if I select one of my automatic watches, of which I have 10. Once I get them cranked up, set the time and date, it just seems that I should give them a bit of a run, but no more than 3 or 4 days in a row. That's the way it is.

So why in the world would I want to compound my problem by purchasing any more watches? Why do I continue to look at watches, and to covet them? Why did I buy another watch today? It's crazy, and I expect that more than a few Crunchers can identify with my "problem." Maybe it's time to draw a line. I don't know, maybe I should just be grateful that I don't have unlimited funds. God only knows what trouble I would be in then. 😜 Any tips for me @JaeBust? I think you might have some. 😊

Decision fatigue is definitely an issue. Picking out what to wear shouldn’t be a stressful ordeal.

I wear a different watch daily, but sometimes I repeat. I do not consider it a problem to provide specific tips. I wear what matches my mood, day of the week, activity, and outfit. It has never been a problem; I tend to go with the flow!

I don’t nearly have forty watches, not even twenty. My addiction to buying watches is waning precisely because I have no problem in the morning choosing a watch.

For the past 4 months I’ve only been wearing my GMT Master 2 and my Seiko Prospex SPB 187. For a bit the Seiko 5 Rowing Blazers joined the rotation but it was fleeting. In that time I bought a Spinnaker Fleuss which saw wrist time the day I got it and to take a pic to post WRUW, that’s it. I’ve since given that away.

I never set out to collect watches, and I really don’t consider myself a collector even with about 16 watches. I’ve always liked watches and can’t remember I time I didn’t have a watch on my wrist. When I got a TAG Formula 1 as a gift that was the first time I had a watch over a couple hundred dollars. I wore that for years until I broke the $1000 barrier with a TAG Carrera Chronograph. The Carrera was replaced by my GMT master 2, a couple years later, and that was my GADA, daily beater for about 15 years. Through those years I bought quite a bit of watches, all under a grand, a Flieger, a Limes Pharo, a few Swatches, a Hamilton Khaki Field, a Citizen Eco Drive, a Bulova Precisionist, a Tissot, and others. Some are still with most were given away. All those watches would spend a day or two on the wrist until I’d strap that GMT back on for months and sometimes years.

It was until a few years ago that my interest in more expensive watches was rekindled, when I bought the Tudor Black Bay GMT. For about 6 months it was my daily beater then I found Seiko. It had always been in my conscious but other than a couple quartz watches that my parents bought me in my youth and inspite of my knowledge about the Spring Drive I had no interest until I saw the display case at the Rolex Tudor AD. In quick succession I got a Monster, a Presage Sharp Edge GMT and the SPB 187.

So each morning, the choice is simple, the old GMT Master 2 or the SPB187, all the others sit idle on my dresser. I’d like to get a Calatrava (though I don’t think I’d ever pass the 10k mark), or a Reverso, or a GS Spring Drive, or a Seamaster Aqua Terra but I fear they’d soon join the also rans, so I think I’m done.

Collecting watches is a passion

Rotating each one daily is how I deal with decision fatigue

Have about 30 myself, with favor given to the tool watches for office and casual wear. I break them down into 4 watch boxes, spending the most time curating the “tool box,” while sometimes picking from the “dress box” or “casual box” and little attention to the “overflow box.” This helps narrow my focus to the main box.

I couldn't cope with that many! I'd rather have a small well considered collection - currently have 6, tho my Mrs is also into the hobby & has 5 herself.

I just don't see the appeal of a huge collection, it'd do my head in 🤣

I got 12 plus watches there’s times I change 3x in one day. My normal is 2x daily from daily work beater to chill out at home watch.
