Yesterday's Fancy

Meta’s algorithms ensure that I continue to receive a steady stream of watch adverts in my FB feed. In addition, I’m frequently checking out YouTube for watch videos, and also watch sites like WatchCrunch to see what’s out there in watch world. There are so many nice watches, but unless one has unlimited means, one cannot pull the trigger each time one finds a watch that captures one’s fancy. As a result, it is not uncommon for today’s fancy to, regretfully, go unpurchased. Meanwhile, time marches on, and other watches have captured my attention. That is not to say, however, that yesterday’s fancy is forgotten, and indeed sometimes the call can be strong to bring it back to the front burner.

Recently, I watched a video reviewing newly released versions of the Casio Edifice EFR-S108D. Essentially, Casio was introducing three new colorways for this model: green, denim blue, and tiffany blue. This watch, which was initially released 3 years ago with two dial color options (black, and white), received glowing reviews. I was immediately interested. Apparently, many others were too, as the availability of the watch seemed to be in short supply. The few vendors I found that had the watch were marking up the price by a good amount. I decided to wait. Then, coming across the video reviewing the new colorways for this model, the watch was back on my radar, and I locked onto it. While I liked the new colors, I preferred the original black dial version, so I checked to see if it was still available. It was, and I wasted no time in ordering it. I’m not sure if the black dial version I ordered is currently being produced, or if the watch I found is new old stock. In any case, after receiving it I am pleased to report that the watch lives up to its glowing reviews.

The day after I ordered the Casio, I remembered another watch that had caught my fancy a couple of years back, the Citizen Promaster BN0211-50E. This watch, now discontinued, had really tempted me, but at $500 it was a bit steep for an impulse buy. I had to pass. Now, though, I had saved up a bit of coin for a new watch. No particular target, really, but then the Promaster BN0211-50E popped into mind. As a discontinued model, it is not readily available, but I did manage to find one (new old stock), and order it. As with the Casio, it met all of my expectations, and lived up to all the reviews I had read, including one here on Watchcrunch submitted by contributor Fiatjeepdriver.

So, after adding two very nice watches to my collection, I am feeling a little bit satiated on the watch front. Still hearing some steady pings coming from my watch radar, though, and trying hard not to check the screen to see what’s on display.

My name is Gregg, and I’m a watch junkie.

I've included links to a couple of reviews for the Casio Edifice EFR-S108D that initially piqued my interest. (Ben's Watch Club also has a review of the newly released colorways for this watch.)
