Recommendations for my first Panerai!

Growing up in a small island in the early 2000s, I never truly dived into Panerai.

At that time, it seems to be a huge bulky hype watch bankers, yuppies (probably a local term) & car salesmen wore.

It’s probably not but being an awkward young adult. I tend to steer away from hype and only look at things when the hype dies down.

The hype died a long while back but I never truly looked at it… until now.

Apart from the amazing history and probably the first proper military use dive watch… the Paneristis did it for me. Im truly blown by how the club is like a family, a brotherhood, a unit. Many but one.

I literally teared at this brilliant video where Revolution Watch interviewed Greg Watchman. video

Long story short. I want in. I want to finally get my first Panerai and I need advice cause there are a thousand references.

I love the Radiomir but I have been told to get the Luminor as my first Pam.

Do advice on what you think my first Pam should be and why?

Be great if it’s 47mm and a throwback to its roots.

Thank you in advance crunchers!

  1. Yuppie (Young Urban Professionals) was a global term.

  2. My story is about like yours, and I appreciate Panerai for what they are; a different idea to solve the dive watch problem from back in the day. Will I get one? Probably not, but that's a financial decision; not one of style.

Believe me, a 44mm one is enough, I recommend you go to an AD and try on several and then you will choose the one you like the most. I chose the Luminor PAM 1088 GMT

May I suggest you do research regarding the changes that the Panerai leadership made during the last 20 years. I’m assuming you want to purchase a relatively new piece. So some pieces are using non Panarai movements. Those watches are not as popular as the in house movements. That is a consideration. Some pieces mark significant changes in quality. Pieces like the 233 gmt are a example. So in summary there is a lot to think about when choosing a Panerai. Good luck with your search

To add

I would suggest choosing which elements you like the most: sandwich dial or a sausage dial, the straight case or the 1950 case, polished or brushed bezel, Radiomer Luminor or submersible, etc

Than start looking for the models with those features

For me I wanted a Luminor with the 1950, and a transparent back

Yeah I’d echo some others here saying you gotta try them on. I have a 7.5in wrist and the classic 47mm just overpowered me in person. You may really dig it though.

I’m a Luminor guy but whatever you like, hard to go wrong.

I’m have a 6.75in flat top wrist and I’m sure the 47mm would look like a clock. Haha.. but true on having to try. I wear my watches to work in oil and gas and it might be a tat tiring after a whole day. Thank you!

Yes that’s true! I’m slowly but surely getting up to speed with the references and etc. Thank you! :)

Try on firstly.

If you can be swayed by Brietling then you don’t want a Panerai, absolutely no comparison.

I have had a few Panerai, currently own 2 with another on the way.

The WR argument has now become nonsensical. NO ONE DIVES WITH A WATCH. And the majority of people who buy 4 figure watches wouldn’t take them in a pool! Panerai doesn’t even have an elapsed time bezel. And as for size, millions of people wear Seiko, you never hear to big for me about Seiko except maybe a Tuna. So here is a pic of my 45mm Radiomir next to a Seiko Turtle.
