My First Seiko Mod - Fifty Five Fathoms

It started with a damaged Seiko SNZH57K1 on a jangly bracelet gifted to me by a family member. After switching out the scratched Hardlex for a dome sapphire crystal and replacing the bracelet for a NATO (4/4), I realized that this was the model often used as a base for Fifty-Five Fathoms mods. Being a novice modder, it took ~8 months to get the watch to the stage where I was happy to knock about in it like any of my other luxury timepieces (1/4). The dial and hands have been updated, as has the lumed bezel insert. The NATO was swapped out for an excellent sailcloth strap with a deployment clasp from Artem (3/4). The final touch was installing a gold rotor on the original 7S36 movement that can be seen through the display case back (2/4). In retrospect, I should have probably swapped it out for a hackable NH35 and gone for a non-guilt dial but 🤷

I’ve always wanted to mod one myself. Some day I’ll get around to picking up parts & tools. I really dig the rotor on this.

It looks awesome.  I built one a few years back and sold it to a buddy.  I may build another one soon, I kinda miss it.

Beautiful work!  I also agree with @Rich_P  about the rotor, that looks amazing!  Inspiring work!

I'm not afraid to take things apart - I did so as a child with my toys - and I will be building a watch in the future.

Go for it. Needs a bit of investment in tools and parts + learning some new skills but well worth it in the end. I'll post a couple more projects in the coming days.

Nice work there buddy, that's a fine finished product you can be very proud of! Love the gold rotor too!

If you could clean the text at the top of the dial leaving just "SEIKO" and removing the badge and Sports it would be awesome.

That’s the way the dial comes from #yobokies . But tbh I like the way it is as a Blancpain homage and Dad joke (Fathoms/Meters)
