My first big scratch

Hello,

I've been wearing this piece almost every day since I bought it (that's 6 months ago). Today I found out it had it's first "quite visible" scratch. This had to happen at some point, still I can't help but being sick. Is there anything I can do to make it less visible ?

Hey man, sorry that the scratch is causing you angst!

Here's what I've read and been told by my watchmaker:

  • Polished surfaces will always be scratch magnets, and that's just how life is
  • You can always have a watchmaker polish your watch, but he says "DON'T DO IT" - a) for valuable watches, it actually destroys value as collectors want the real wear and tear, b) these are meant to be things that get scuffed up over time to develop personality, and c) it'll just get scratched up all over again anyway

Good luck, man!

I will try to meditate over this. Maybe I just need to accept that it has turned from brand new "same as the others" watch to personal (with history) watch.

It's true that my first watch (an SKX007) was gifted to me by a friend who had worn it for years, and the 2 scratches that he had made are part of the things I like the most about this watch.

It's tough to accept the first scratch but in my experience, ten years in, the scratches and scuffs are what makes the watch mine and I would be furious if they were polished out when I send in for service. Having said that, it does look a fairly superficial scratch so likely easy to polish out. Lovely watch by the way, Longines are producing some great watches right now.

I learned to embrace my scratches.  It adds character!

A friend of mine has about 400k miles on his Porsche. The car looks horrible, but in the end he allowed the car to fulfill its purpose. I feel the same about scratches on watches. They are meant to be worn.

Know the feeling.

I knocked my speedmaster on som metal railing yesterday. It made a ding in the bezel, and now I’m sad🥲

You can try a Cape Cod Cloth to polish out. They work pretty well. They are available on Amazon, and there are some YouTube videos showing how to use them. It’s pretty easy, and works pretty well on surface scratches.

Hey, thanks for the advice, I'll look into this.

It doesn’t look that bad, I’d try Cape Cod cloths, they work pretty well from my experience.

Cape Cod indeed ! Works wonders on polished parts.

NOT on brushed parts ! For this, use the Bergeon 5444-B satin. Miracles done on my Omega steel clasp.

polywatch tube for the win.

Ohh sorry boss. Agree with @Omeganut and Forest Gump, sh*t happens. Adds character, supposed to happen, can’t be avoided, yeah yeah yeah.

Doesn’t mean that ‘80’s montage music can’t play in the background when you see the first scratch though.

There's something to be said for buying lightly used, with those first scratches already there. If the scratch bothers you that much, perhaps a G-Shock would be a better choice? There's enough to worry about in life without being bothered by scratches on a watch. Hope you can get over it.

I got a similar scratch from a subway turnstile 10 minutes after I walked out of an AD after purchasing my first luxury watch. It adds character! I think it was helpful for me to recognize that I don’t need to baby the watch.

·

The first is always the worst!

Seriously dont worry about it - its a watch you wear, not a museum exhibit behind an inch of glass.  Carry on wearing it, knowing that the worst scratch is out of the way, and enjoy the watch all the more for it.
