Maen Hudson 38 GMT Automatic ( first impressions )

Maen, Moon, Main, or Man anyway you say it, it just works and speaks volumes of the passion, enthusiasm, and attention to detail of the Hudson 38 GMT (Mk IV) line creators.

Ordered in December 2022, delivered in July 2023, and enjoying from August 2023 onwards... Happy August moon festival 2023!

Pros:

1) Watch dimensions are suitable for slighter wrist individuals and can be both casual and dressy due to watch measurements.

2) Nicely balanced weight of watch case and bracelet that is super comfortable and disappears on the wrist. Four micro adjust holes on clasps also make it easy to find the perfect fit on the standard 5 link metal bracelet.

3) Diver's 30 ATM specs with office/caller GMT complication with 120 click uni-directional 24 hour bezel and 24 hour rehaut allow for tracking of a third time zone.

4) Fit and finish of the watch case and bracelet are beautifully executed.

5) Tool watch aesthetic that flies under the radar that just wants to be worn and can be a one and done watch.

Cons:

1) Buckle and solid clasp have some sharp edges and corners which seem too unfinished the touch ( I think these will get smoother over time ).

2) Sometimes the contrast can be challenging with the white face against the polished silver minute and hour skyscraper hands, depending on the light and background condition of the environment ( possible remedy could be brush finishing one half of the skyscraper minute and hour hands to give that added contrast for all lighting conditions and environments).

Uses a Soprod C-125 Elaboré Grade ( +7/-7 seconds in three positions ) according to the website. Keeping good time so far more on the plus side which is my personal preference.

Everything I've seen from them so far looks really nice.

The name & font combination of the logo scream "chinese knock-off brand" to me which is unfortunate.

I felt the same way for a minute too, but see that it is a way to have logo and text not bleed on a textured dial. Sometimes looks like an afterthought or a sticker but only time will be the judge of that…

I have the Maen Hudson 38 GMT - AGM.03 - "root beer" colourway. Overall, I would rate this watch as a 3 out of 5. It looks great but is let down by a few things I didn't expect from a watch costing this much. The clasp definitely has some unpleasant sharp edges. The logo etching on the crown is also unpleasant to touch. Resizing the bracelet required some solvent to breakdown the thread-locking compound on the screws. Finally, the watch is running about 15-20 seconds fast which is out of spec. for an elabore grade movement. I hoped it would settle down, but it hasn't. Looks like a trip to a watchmaker.

I would definitely agree with the watch clasp needing some improvement on the sharp edges finishing side. My watch is also running about 15-20 seconds faster after about a week but I am totally okay with that ( for me it is better fast than slow ). I find I like to wear my faster running mechanical watches because I enjoy wearing them for a few days or weeks - running slow for me would be a bummer...

Your root beer colourway looks amazing but decided on the white because I already have a number of black or dark coloured dial watches. Is your GMT arrow really pumpkin or yellowish in actual colour? How do you like it? My white dial face is whiter than the sandy/fleshy depiction on their website and has a good vintage inspired but modern aesthetic with the muted bright orange GMT arrow matching the 24, 6, 12, 9 chapter ring and HUDSON text at the 6 o'clock.

Purchased my watch early during the additional discount period but was glad that the actual watch face ( white dial ) is better in flesh than the pictures on MAEN website. After taxes and duties the watch does add up in price but the more you wear it, the cheaper it gets...

My watch is running 15-20 sec /day. If it were 15-20 sec /week like yours that would be great. The GMT arrowhead is a warm yellow/gold colour. One thing to be aware of when ordering the root beer version is that the renders of the bezel are a little misleading. The renders imply engraved numbers but in reality, they are printed. Maen, clarified this to me after I asked them at the time I placed the order. I could have backed out then. The renders haven't been updated which is a little disappointing.
