The Fashion Watch

I don’t mind the occasional fashion watch. Even as an enthusiast, I always get attracted now and again to the design of a fashion watch. Though whose to define the line between what is and isn’t considered fashion.

Fossil especially to me seems like the Swatch of America if you go through the history a bit. And there are some bangers I’d love to own, and also own. The green dial Barron is from my wife, yeah it isn’t a chrono but I do like the aesthetic. I’ve also come to like this automatic with a very light purple dial. A bit thick for the size, but again like the design overall.

Lastly, this Coach watch, though the overall shape is obviously a Tank, the details bring a bit of character to it.

To an extent, it could be said that all watches are "fashion" watches. After all, few of us really need a watch as a tool, we are choosing to wear them as an accessory.

What I do find amusing are the enthusiasts who get all sniffy about brands like Fossil – that largely produce original designs – then seem to greet homage watches with equal distain on the grounds that they are unoriginal.

I do wonder if there isn't just a hint of snobbery that mainstream brands like Fossil are, well, mainstream. And to be a "proper" enthusiast one should eschew such common tastes.

I'm not a fan of the mentality that fashion watches or any other kind of watches for that matter (hype, smart, homage, etc) somehow have less to offer than "legitimate" brands and therefore only suckers buy them.

We don't all look at money the same way. Someone's 300 USD fashion watch vs someone's 300 USD "legitimate" watch aren't comparable because that no two people will value that 300 USD the same way. I'm not talking about whether one person is richer or poorer. Two people earning the same amount of money working the same job will most likely prioritize different things. One person may think the world revolves around watches, the other person just wants something that works and looks good. One person may get more features and heritage for their 300 USD, sure, but the other doesn't care enough about those things to waste time and energy. To them, a watch is just a watch. Who's to say which one is spending the right amount on something?
