Kickstarter watches?

Good or bad, what’s happening?

I’m pretty sure crunchers here know of the site kickstarter, Indiegogo, and the sort. There are several things even I’ve bought from this site, including the Pebble smartwatch back in 2015. But not every backer gets rewarded.

For instance, the Legatodiver by MW Timepieces. I’ve been intrigued to get it since 2021, it is a creation by Indonesias number one watch channel on YouTube, had prototype videos, as well as reviews by prominent watch YouTubers all over.

In the end, as of my understanding currently the watch hasn’t been delivered to any of its backers, there is no sign of it being readily available on its website, or anywhere else. And I would have thought it to come up on e commerce sites or resellers once the piece goes out. But where is this elusive watch? Or is it just a scam? Why isn’t there any explanation on what happened to the time piece. Such a shame if it’s true it hasn’t been distributed, because the specs and price weren’t all on the low end as it had a choice to get a sellita movement.

These crowdfunding sites do open doors for emerging micro brands, and is great to kick start a business. But if the end goal is to just get up and run as if nothing happened and pocket it all just seems crazy to me.

Anyway, just wondering what are the thoughts of crunchers here on this? Has anyone here went on to order an MW Timepiece? Thanks and let’s discuss!

Any time you pay for something without that product being in stock and ready to ship you are taking a chance. Any business could go bankrupt because don't expect a company to broadcast that it is struggling. You pay your money and take a chance and protect yourself as best as you can. That's why kickstarter companies offer better deals to backers.

·

hey man i also came from indonesia and watch the channel that produced this mw timepieces, i may not ordered one but from my understanding mr adrian the owner start this brand with the best intention but lack of knowledge about manufacture process in china, so there might be some problem with manufacture or delivery process. i think this issued wouldnt be resolved soon, so its better to ask for refund (if it is an option). as far as his youtube channel he never mention this mw timepieces anymore 🫠🫠

Understandable it is like making a bad investment in a company I guess. Great discussion mate

Halo Om salam kenal 👋🏽 Yeah true the manufacturing side might not have been calculated accordingly. Just a shame that it just up and gone disappeared and never mentioned again. Even though the concept was so interesting and really hoped to see it around. It’s also I just saw him make a new watch with design atelier, and that video had the comments disabled. Hard not to be a bit curious and cautious

It can vary WILDLY on crowd-funding sites. At one end of the scale, people have created products - they already exist - and they basically use the platform to kick-off their product. It's pure marketing. Again, the product exists, whether they reach a total or not. It's virtually zero risk. At the other end of the spectrum you have people who have an idea, and need the money to make it happen. Basically anything can go wrong from there, and you'll be waiting some time, even if things go right. The trick of crowd-funding is figuring out where on the scale the thing you're interested in sits, and whether you're happy to take a gamble on where it sits. Some are easy to throw money at. Others you would need a lobotomy to back.

When Tribus was in business I bought a watch from them and in the middle of a sale it came out that they had gone into administration. I never heard anyone say they didn't get their watch but I know people were waiting a while.

I had a positive experience with Namica watches which started on Kickstarter.

I have previously backed other smaller Kickstarters in the past, but they were all not as expensive or complex as a watch.

I missed out on the first funding campaign by about a month & purchased mine when there was a restock on their website. I probably would have backed the original campaign given the chance because I love the design.

By being forced to wait for the original orders to be fulfilled, I got to see the first customer production model reviews roll in before I decided to buy it. I re-watched all the YouTube reviews countless times too in those months.

Crowdfunding is always a gamble and it comes down to your personal risk tolerance. You are ultimately backing a good idea which would likely not been able to get made otherwise.

BUT there is also risk of bad actors or inexperienced show runners not being able to arrange production models efficiently/timely or deliver something of questionable quality.

It's a gamble on a good idea at the end of the day.

dulu klo g salah om adrian prnh mentioned boleh refund apakah g ad lanjutannya ya om? gw dulu respect bgt sm dia stlh kejadian ini udah beda pandangan gw. baru2 ini kyknya bikin lagi dia utk subscriber berbayarnya, tp utk mw timepieces udh lama g ad update

This is why the only groups I’ve backed on Kickstarter are groups with a track record. Xeric being one of them.

·

The crowd source sites (all of them) were an interesting idea whose time has passed. I had been backing projects fairly regularly for the last 10-15 years. In the last 3 years I have been burned more than all the prior years combined. I’ve been scammed for close to $1000usd in total and have sworn off crowdsourcing completely. It seems like there are a lot of campaigns that are being released on aliexpress (at a lower price) long before they are shipped to backers. I’ve had the shipping terms changed at the last minute and been extorted for 2/3 more money to “cover shipping”.

The problem is the hosting sites make money regardless of how badly the end user gets burned. They have no incentive to fix the issues.

He's not the first YouTuber to do something like this and he certainly won't be the last. I tend to view all the Kickstarter campaigns as e-begging and don't get involved with any of them.

Better safe then sorry eh bud

Thanks for the insight, true at the end of the day it is a gamble on an investment to the company I guess more than a purchase of the product.

Anyway what a nice piece, love the purple dial and texture on the crown

Nah dulu Ada akun IG Simonzzo sempet nge bahas belum ada tindak lanjut apa2, Ada juga temen gue di IG yg mention “gue ga mau bahas lagi Kalau perihal jam merk itu” seems like he bought it but didn’t get any updates on the watch sampai skrg.

Bener gue jg sampe unsubscribe bro gara2 Abis MW itu dia malah bikin subscription berbayar, plus bikin lagi jam tourbillon, tapi kayak sweeping under the rug si MW even though udah di bikin company benerannya jg itu Kalo gasalah di video2 awal penjelasannya.

Mgkn emg ga niat jahat sih, tp sebelum mulai subscirption dan penjualan jam tangan lain, I feel we deserve (especially backers nya) a legitimate explanation

Wondering if this is a tactic by the projects due to loopholes, or do the projects also get burned due to miscalculation or mismanagement? Sorry to hear that mate, true the early days of crowdfunding were much smoother. I remember my Pebble Time, as well as Tens sunglasses as some projects I backed

I think that dishonest people realized that the crowdsourcing sites had no interest in, or incentive to vet the projects that were being promoted. As a result the crowd sourcing sites have turned into scam central. I've been noticing it a lot with CraigsList and some of the other message board based specialty sites I frequent (glassblowing equipment, custom car parts, etc). You can tell when someone nefarious discovers the site because there is a sudden rash of scam posts and messages.

As of now, no real updates mate. You could check out his YouTube channel Horology Story, never mentions it again. And has started this premium membership thing totally disregarding his previous venture into watch making. I’ve started to distance from his videos, as he also mostly does random micro brands, which he later on sells at a premium on e commerce sites. Very disappointing to see one of the largest watch channels in Indonesia do something like this. Was never a fan of how he presented himself in videos, but with this just puts a cap on his whole persona

Thanks for this, mate. Sounds like the whole thing was a scam 😩.

Sy another victim yg sampe skrg masih nunggu refund dr MW. Just wondering, did you know if anyone has been successfully getting their refunds? Im not sure what I can do about to get my hard earned money back 😭

I was promised for a refund, but every time I followed up the response was ‘next week’ or ‘Later, I’m busy’. Basically lots of excuses and false promises but never received the product nor the refund. No replies anymore in the last few days, so not sure what else I can do.

Waduh, sabar yaa. I guess one of the only ways is to try and bring up the topic, or ask frequently for answers to his YouTube channel Horology Story. Such a slap in the face too as he’s still running other businesses alongside that failed attempt for MW. Was really convincing showing patents and stuff for the product, really didn’t expect it to go down this way

Thank you for the suggestion! I will try bring it up on his fb or youtube video comments. But curious about what happened to others who are on the same boat. His reputation seems to not be impacted despite about $40,000 being raised for the project that never gets delivered
