I have read that some would say that Grand Seiko Spring Drive is not really an apple to apple comparison with other Swiss brands as they are not really pure mechanical watches.  My take is while that maybe true (I am not a mechanical expert here.. ) - but they are not really quarts either.  Which is why I give double thumbs up to GS for their accuracy in in any case.  Would be interested to hear others thought and view.

It better be accurate given the complexity of the electronics involved.  The rotor has to power an electrical generator to power an integrated circuit, which references the quartz chip and regulates an electromagnet to regulate the timekeeping.  In addition, the rotor must also power the gear train to drive the hands.

My hot take is that it’s a Rube Goldberg machine... i.e. a very complicated system that provides the same accuracy as an HAQ with the service requirements of a traditional mechanical movement.

I have a couple of GS spring drives in my collection and they are favorites. I like the accuracy, finish, and smooth sweep of the second hand. I also like the idea of generating the electrical energy needed via mechanical movement. Finally, I like variety in my collection, so also have mechanical automatics, quartz and mechanical winders. Most importantly, enjoy your collection.
