Quality

Whenever you think Chinese quality isn't that bad, just think back to this picture, where they've literally shellacked a hair into the pallet jewel. Grant you, a $30 mechanical watch with a CCP "standard" movement is going to be bottom end. But this... Wtf?

I don't think you can say that's reflective of all of China's manufacturing capabilities, but yes, that's a funny thing that happened.

Yes I am sure all Chinese watches are made the same and a stray hair in a movement never happened in any other region. 👍

·

It’s a movement feature! Haha

Oh exactly. I've not seen anything like this on my good watches (Sugess).

You are using a $30 mechanical watch to pass judgement on the quality of Chinese manufacturing?

You're going to see a lot in many movements from any country if you run them through a microscope. You'd see a lot in luxury brand movements as well. Watches are not made in cleanroom environments nor are they hermetically sealed.

Never walk the floor of a Detroit auto line, or Tesla for that matter.

QC is not a China-specific issue and there are plenty of brilliant Chinese manufacturers just as there are good and bad Swiss, German, and US manufacturers.

Manufacturing in China is as good as you pay for, just look at pocket knife companies. Some of the cheapest knives in the world come from there but also some of the most expensive. The phrase 'you get what you pay for' definitely applies.

I like the random collection of letters they use as names when selling on Amazon.

I've actually done that. Many times.

Then you will know QC can vary widely by line, worker, and day of the week and some brands are better than others. As others said, the production, be it in Hangzhou, Geneve, Minato City, or Glashütte is only as the company and the person working at that time. Right now, it is easy to point to a number of Chinese watchmakers (Antlier Wen, Behrens, Celadon, or Qin Gan to name a few) who are rivaling if not besting their contemporaries. Trying to hold an Ali express watch as the poster child for Chinese watches is like trying to hold a Chevy Trax for US cars. Neither is fair.
