What Do You Want to See in a Rolex Explorer Review?

Right now, I'm working on a deep dive review of the Rolex Explorer. It was my grail watch before, and had deep personal meaning to me. This will be a narrated video review with lot's of pics and video of the watch.

So we all know about how it commemorates the Sir Hillary Edmonds and Tensing Norgay reaching the summit of Everest. And it's a very functional minimalist style that appeals to my aesthetic. But what are your feelings about the watch?

Now I want this to be a very personal story about how this watch fits into my life. I'll be talking about it. But I also wanted to know if you have any questions. Or anything you're curious about regarding this watch.

Specifically, I have the 214270 reference with the 39mm case size. But I can cover the Explorer model no problem. I have also had hands on experience with the 36mm model.

So, do you have any questions that you want answered? Let me know, and I'll try my best to cover them.

Sure, but no one watches a 10 hour video lol

I was kidding. 😁

Seriously, I don’t really need to see another video review on the Rolex Explorer. But I’d watch your video and give it a like when you’ve put it up on YouTube.

It's no problem. I know there are lots of videos on this. But I think you'll find my review is different. I started this channel because I was frustrated with the usual watch reviews; it's all specs and wrist shots, nothing about how they actually like to wear it in their personal life. Because they don't, it usually review mills. But I've worn this for months and want to talk about how it fits into my daily life. That's what I really want in a review. But I'm open to requests.

Just like @weng_c I'm uninterested in another Rolex Explorer review. I understand the appeal and wouldn't fault anyone for interest in them but personally I find Rolex to be kind of "Meh...". And there is already SO much content on them.

I would rather see a video on how while Rolex is divisive with both fans and detractors feeling strongly, the watch industry is driven by them and how things might change if they didn't exist. With examples of how much more or less competitive the remaining watch company's would have been. Or if the entire watch industry would have collapsed and vanished under the Smart Watch crisis without the allure of Rolex as a status symbol.

Or a video on the similarities of the quartz watch crisis and the smartwatch crisis and how each drove innovation, drive new interest to the watch hobby, culled the weak, or changed perceptions of watches.

All supported with lots of graphs and numbers, and background. But I'm a bit of both a math nerd and a watch nerd, so I might be the only one that tuned into that.

However, I will tune in and likely give your video a thumbs up. Not because of the subject matter but because you have a unique viewpoint, well thought out and researched ideas, plus background and data to support any conclusions you make.

Maybe you'll convert me to a Rolex fan.

A math nerd and watch nerd describes me too. I'm a data scientist at work. At least that's what they call it now. Every decade there's a new buzz word, you know what I mean.

We think alike. I don't call it the quartz crisis, I call it the quartz revolution. Seeing it from only the perspective of Swiss watchmakers always seemed unbalanced to me. And I'm fascinated by the smartwatch industry. What happening now is every bit the disruption as the quartz, if not more. I think quartz basically replaced the mechanical watch. Smartwatches are transforming the fundamental function of a watch. Even more so if we count smart wearables since they'll likely perform similar functions. I would love to do a deep dive video on this. I've called smartwatches the tool watches of our day. And I just read the first gen Apple watch is now considered 'vintage' and service is hard to find. What a world we live in.

I'm not exactly a fan of Rolex. I wanted their watches due to a personal connection and childhood memories. After I get the Sub, I'm done. IMHO, I think if not Rolex, then the instagram crowd would have picked another brand. Humans are status seeking people and insist on social displays. Analyzing exactly what brand would be fascinating. Maybe a topic for another video. Thanks for you kind words.

I have a picture of my dad working at his watch shop. I'll talk about that.

You can certainly weave the Explorer into the story to make it more powerful and more meaningful. Your passion about the watch will come through.

How the only watch at the top of everest was a smiths and there is no evidence of a rolex being worn on the summit 😉

Therefor the explorer is a nod to the smiths

·

Something that hasn't been said before.

Good luck.

Yes, I have clear evidence of this I found in my research. Even if Rolex had been carried the last mile, it would have been an oyster perpetual.

Not something most would do given the price, but I'd just love to see how it holds up and the relationship with the user when they do adventurous things with it.

I can do something along those lines. I'll be taking it salsa dancing tonight :-). There's a ton of fast arm movement. That's what I mean when I say doing reviews differently; you'll see me actually doing things and living life with the watch. Thanks for the feedback!

Can't wait to see it!
