HANDS-ON: Test your limits with the new Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic

Imagine you’re a watch brand. If you had a 20 year old watch model in your catalogue, what would you do? How would you breathe new life into it so that both fans of the brand, and those you’re trying to attract, feel moved? This is not an easy task and it is one that … Continued The post HANDS-ON: Test your limits with the new Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic appeared first on Time and Tide Watches. Ok, I low-key love this release from Alpina. And I’m sure after one look, everyone will say it’s a mashup of an AP Royal Oak and Nautilus. I can see the similarities to those watches, but to me it looks like the love child of a three-way between a Seiko Samurai (aggressive, angular case), IWC Ingenieur (riveted looking bezel), and a Richard Mille (rubber in the crown). Curious to hear your guys thoughts on this one and if you think it’s a good value for $1700 USD. I might be adding this one to my short list.

My son is kina an homage of me, my wife, my parents and my in-laws. But he still is his own new person.

Don't know if that's a good analogy?

I can understand the folks who might shortcut to the idea that this is just another RO/Nautilus mashup (God knows we've seen enough of those) but I think that's probably a little reductionist.

I think it's attractive and has a lot more personality than most Alpinas, which look pretty generic to me.  So kudos.

I think my main concern is that the squareish case and long lug to lug mean that it could wear very large indeed.

It’s a good analogy for sure and I agree. It definitely feels like it’s own thing to me, but it also has nice familiar elements from other watches which I really enjoy.

Yea, I am curious to hear/see how it wears. On paper it doesn’t sound like 41mm should be a concern, but squaring that out will undoubtedly make it wear a few mm larger on wrist.

I wish watch websites would include wrist sizes in the wrist shots.  Its such a small amount of incremental effort and such a massive value add.

I'm merely guessing but the alpina looks really good on the guy in the article but he also looks like he might have a very stout wrist given which how many holes out they are on the strap....

Couldn't agree more! Dimensions are expected, but a visual reference for how it's being modeled with noted wrist size would go a long way (if anyone from T&T is reading!). Even tho everyone's wrist shape will obviously influence the actual wearability, having a stated wrist size would at least help people quickly evaluate whether it's at least within the realm of possibility for them.

Good sleuthing with the number of strap holes tho...will have to pay attention to that more in other reviews!
