Waiting to fall in love

There are watches that you immediately fall in love with at first sight. For me it’s the Omega Speedmaster 39mm. As soon as I saw it, I knew I have to have it. When I’m not wearing it I feel guilty, as if I’m having an illicit affair.

There are watches that you grow to love. For me that’s my 60s Seiko Cronos. I’m not a Seiko fan. One would even call me a Seiko critic. When my vintage girl was trying to sell it to me, I allowed myself to be “forced” to buy it since it was aftordable enough and I figured buying it is a show of good will to a person who’s becoming more of a friend now than vintage watch contact. I didn’t fall in love immediately. But the more I use it the more it brought me joy and slowly I learned to love it. Now it’s one of my favorite pieces. It hasn’t convinced me to try out more Seiko though. The issues I have with Seiko are still there, this vintage piece is just the exception.

Then there are watches that, on paper, you should immediately love but don’t. The 38mm Breitling Colt Ocean that I traded with my father is the perfect hot girl. Gorgeous, right fit, comes from a reputable family, head turner, performs very well… she’s a dream girl. Maybe someone else’s dream girl but I’m finding she’s not mine. I’ve been waiting to fall in love with her, taking her out on dates, wearing her constantly. Wearing her right now. But something is off. No chemistry? I don’t know what it is.

That's the thing about chemistry, it's unpredictable.

I have found there is nothing rational when it comes to a connection with a watch. You can’t force it. It either happens or it doesn’t.

·

Whereas I love the PRX, absolutely no reason. I agree that one should take time to pick up a watch and not rush into anything. I at least like the Breitling enough not to throw it at a car that cuts me off in traffic. I plan on keeping it for a while. Who knows?

True that. Ever fell in love with a watch you initially thought you would hate? It’s chemistry.

You’re right. I’ll hold on to the Breitling for now. Maybe trade it or sell it later.

Try wearing them with a different bands/bracelet.

Yeah I could try that. See if sparks something. Thanks for the suggestion.

Of course the Colt and Chronomat are siblings but different, the first time that I saw a 80s Chronomat with rose gold bezel, original bullet bracelet and rhrodium dial with gold zones, I dumped the sad little gold and steel Datejust that was on my wrist and did not even think about the AP perpetual Royal Oak Moonphase that I had just paid for, it was the beginning of a love affair for me and even my two young daughters till the present. Love is funny, move on from the Colt!

I should. Except it’s still a family piece. I won’t call it an heirloom. But it was my father’s and eventhough I traded a goddamn Omega Seamaster Professional 300M for the Breitling I don’t think I’ll fully own this one, at least not enough to sell it or get rid of it.

Lovely story about your Chronomat. Is this your first day here? Where’s the Chronomat wrist shot? (Insert emojicon here to show I’m just kidding)

Glad you love it. Is that a rubber strap? Thinking of changing up the bracelet, see if it does anything for me

Hi! No I have been a member since last summer, I read the posts but mostly notice guys who are into Breitling watches, gave my daughter a 15 year old Chronomat when she went to Africa before the pandemic. Had to give watches to younger daughter and son in law after that. Think you are going to Taiwan, country of my perfect wife, lol. Excellent country, you are going to have a good time. My father in law had a business there after he left China a million years ago. Ok keep the Colt! I was being rude when I suggested you move on because I knew it belonged to your dad, not a fair trade by the way. Take care, my good man.

Yep. It’s rubber Archer strap. I also bought this great strap from amazon and it fits really nice.

Yup. Will be going to Taiwan. First time since the pandemic. Last time I was there was 2019 on holiday. Wasn't a watch guy then so different mentality flying in.

Been a few years since I was there but food was amazing! My wife who spent the first 20 years living in Taipei, not anxious to return for a visit, lol.

For me it was Avenger Hurricane with yellow dial. I know most people find it “ugly” or at least unconventional, but I fell in love with first sight and had to have it. Still wearing it almost everyday.
