So I was reading a response by @nytime on watch investing thread and he put forth the concept of looking at watch collecting through the lens of identifying/investing in “rookies”. I chuckled at his KD comment, and as its currently the Playoffs, I figured I’d expand on it for fun.
If your watch box is your bench:
A) who are your starting five?
B) who is your sixth man off the bench?
C) They say the PG is the stick that stirs the drink… interpret this as you would… what watch represents your collection best?

If Kevin Durant was a watch he would be:

I got as far as "watch investing"
Figure I’ll chime in too:
A) BB58, Cartier Solarbeat, Alpina 130 Heritage Pilot, Hamilton Intramatic Chrono, Seiko Sarb033
B) Certina DS PH200
C) For me, it’s probably the Hammy. It’s vintage inspired, classic panda dial, 6 o’clock date window sits just outside that that entry luxury, and can shoot the lights out/punch above it’s weight. Close runner up would be the Alpina.
Bonus: Durant feels a bit like an RM. He physically stands out even amongst other giants on the court. He is both beloved and hated.

haha - totally get that. This is less about watch investing and having a bit fun with the basketball comparison.
Damn... I know nothing about basketball. But, if this were about ping pong then Fan Zhendong...
would be this...
and Ma Long...
would be this...
Does that work?
I collect mostly vintage. They are all like this:
edit I missed the part where it said "your watchbox". Think of the following as my dream team 😂 I'll post another comment using my watchbox sometime later!
As I'm a pretty old school basketball fan (honestly I stopped watching regularly ~5 years ago), so this 3 pointer-centric game makes no sense to me. With that said,
A)
C - They used to build teams around these guys. And how. Anyway with that mindset, I'll go with the OG IWC Big Pilot.
PF - More nimble than the C, but still on the larger side, I had to go with the Tudor Pelagos for PF.
SF - Supposed to be the do-it-all. The Omega Aqua Terra seems to fit the bill perfectly here.
SG - I don't know why but the AP RO feels right as the starting SG.
PG - I'm going with a perpetual calendar. What better choice than a PP?
B) When I think sixth man, I think Manu Ginobili. Of course, by no means is the Rolex Sub Argentinian, but it's pretty much one of the best all-rounder watch one could have.
If KD were a watch... I'd go with the Octo Finissimo. Take that as you will 😂

haha no worries! The IWC at C is big, big energy in the paint. 😂 And the AT at SF is perfection - quintessential everyday piece👌
Octo Finissimo for KD is not bad, if anything is in fitting with his (imo) horrible “Durantula” nickname… or his far superior “Slim Reaper” nickname. He is also a bit thin-skinned. 😏

No worries! They say table tennis is the sport of modern gladiator. "They” also happen to be the proud owners of a lucrative paddle-making business. 😂 In all honesty, what game could best maximize the automatic-wound watch if not for ping-pong?
My watch box edition:
C: This beefy Citizen Skyhawk A-T Ti takes the spot.
PF: I debated (internally) which watch should go here but the Hamilton Spirit of Liberty Chronograph is just a bit chunkier and wears bigger, though in an elegant way.
SF: Pretty much the do-it-all, the Orient Mako II is an easy throw on whenever.
SG: The Galaxy Gold, works surprisingly well for most situations despite it being yellow gold-toned. Definitely can shake up the defense with its charms.
PG: Cle de Cartier, the center piece. I did think about building a tonneau-shaped watch collection around this guy but ... maybe in the future.
Sixth man: Apple Watch. Pretty much only comes out for workouts, fitting for a sixth man 😂
I buy watches for fun and for me. I struggle to get excited in investing into consumer goods. Unless its the shares of the company producing them.

Great! This thread isn’t about watch investing - it’s about using a fun/silly NBA concept to have an excuse to talk about your favorite watches in your personal collection. 😂
A - My starting five:
B 6th man: Carnival - IWC homage
C: SanMartin sports watch
I just realised that I own 4 Parnises, and none of them is on the team. I should perhaps draft from other colleges.
Kevin Durant as a watch, hmmmm? Perhaps an Omega Railmaster? Has been around for a while, recognised as a good watch, has its supporters, but always lived in the shadow of others?

Nice lineup!… and so long as one of the Parnises (Parni?) can crack the rotation once and awhile I think they are in fine company. 😂
Really great take on KD… like the living in the shadow of others, and Railmaster definitely fits the bill!👌
I can rival even O-nut with the obscure sports that I follow: cycling and track and field. Apologies, no knowledge of any mainstream sports.
So let’s go with cycling as the slightly more known obscurity.
A) The starters: Mathieu Van Der Poel, Seiko SNR043
Pagacar, my Zodiac Super Sea Wolf
Wout Van Aert , Oris Aquis 43mm
and Jai Hindley is my Seiko Prospex Ginza
And…. My hard as nails bench warmer that I don’t care for, but put on grudgingly for workouts is
Primoz Roglic - my Garmin 945

If you want to attribute a Latin plural to Parnis it would be via the third declension, and as this is a bit irregular, typical would be either Parnis, Parnes or even Parnia as plural forms, probably Parnes.
I did 8 years of Latin at school, a loooong time ago.
KD is the Ressence Type 1
Unique blend of size and shooting that we have never seen before and may never see again.
Starting 5: Nautis 'Aquaman', Timex Marlin, Blacklist Streetmatic, Star Wars Pit Droid novelty, Garmin Smartwatch.
Those 5 can cover 99% of situations.
PG: The Blacklist Streetmatic. It's the one Watch Gang piece I was able to choose before I moved on and is a pretty nice watch
Sixth man: A G-Shock.
At Center, part of the all Omega front court, 43.5mm and chunky
Power Forward at 44mm
At small forward, the legendary
At Shooting Guard
At Point Guard. Arguably not my best, but so damn pretty and versatile and historic
Coming off the bench

Great comp! I’d add his handle to that list - while not off the charts by any means, the fact he is comfortable with the ball in his hands (at his size) is pretty remarkable.

Great line-up! Does the Garmin have a Speedmaster dial/skin? Agreed, definitely can cover nearly all your
Never heard of Blacklist before but looks like a nice piece - reminds me of a mix of Bell & Ross, Speedmaster, and just a pinch of Tudor (Pre-BlackBay days).
Another great take at KD too 😂… in this comparison I’d say Bron be the Yachtmaster and Steph the Explorer?

Hell of a front court… we know who owns the paint. 😂

The Garmin does have a Speedy skin on it.
The Blacklist has been great. It is a quartz, but it's probably my most worn watch recently.
I know nothing about BBall. However, I did buy an example of the watch in your original post in a charity auction and gift it to a BBall fanatic.
The strap is definitely unique.
