Possible RGM purchase?

So, my wife and I went to a local jewelry store to get a replacement gold chain for my oldest daughter. And I know this store doesn't carry any watch brands I'm interested in, but was just looking around anyway, and I see this very nice watch in a display case, upon closer inspection it's an RGM 160, that seems to be in decent shape. The owner said it was from an estate sale, and he could let it go for $4K. I know the retail on these were $6900, back in 2012. It definitely needs some cleaning up but seems to be in very good shape, with the full box set. I'm also local to RGM, about an hour away. So if it did need service, I could take it there. It's very tempting. The dial on this is outstanding. A Blog to Watch did a very positive review of these back in 2012.

Gorgeous watch, I hope you buy it. I've going back and forth to the website. Haven't quite decided on a model yet. Quality in its truest definition.

That is one cool watch with very interesting finishing and complications. I would still bargain a little, but I would get it. And, if I were buying it, I would change the bracelet to a nice leather strap. I think it would make the watch pop up even more.

I smell an opportunity...

Why haven’t you bought it already? Don’t let us slow you down.

The full set comes with a leather strap, but I would never wear it on that. I'm really a metal bracelet kind of guy with a few exceptions. The dial on this is just beautiful. Truly Breguet reminiscent.

The only reason I didn't get it tonight is that this was totally out of the blue. An RGM was not even on my radar. But I'm also trying to decide if this would be a substitute for the Glashütte Original PanomaticLunar that is on my list. So trying to decide if I like this as much as the GO, but the GO is also twice the cost.

Wow. I see your dilemma. It's hard to pick.

Yes, it is a hard pick, but I would still get the RGM. Maybe it my age talking, but the RGM has this old artisan, hand-made feel to it that is not there in the other watch. You know, the guilloche dial, different finishing on sub-dials. It all screams - hand-made. Again, it just my opinion, but this is one hell of a watch for 4K.

Yeah, I agree with everything you are saying. But I'm also debating how much wrist time this would get, based on my current collection and what I tend to wear. I'm very much a steel bracelet sports watch kind of guy, I only have one dress watch that I only wear to formal occasions. Right now I'm thinking that if I can get it for anything under $4K, I'll get it, knowing that it will be worn, just not has heavily as the rest of my collection. I think it's worth having in my collection. And I'll still probably get the GO, down the road.

Given your situation I wouldn’t hesitate. Everything points in the right direction for a good purchase. Let us know what finally comes of it.

Go for it!!!!

·

RGM has been on my want to own list for many years. Finally visited Roland's workshop in October and ultimately placed my order for a PS-801-EE. From PA and those keystone hands are awesome. And I can't stop thinking about the guilloche and enamel finish of the dial.

7 months into a 15 to 18 month delivery timeline. I wait patiently....

I say go for it, the price seems fantastic. I Kong I am happy with my RGM and would consider another one.

Get it!

I'm with the rest, for me I would go for the RGM. It is a really nice looking watch (what a dial!) and you will probably will never see another like that again (unless you go to the RGM shop).

Also the fact that you are only one hour away from RGM and have an "excuse" to visit makes it an even easier decision.

Congratulations on your order. It is worth the wait. I love mine.

Dew it!!

·

Make sure you can get it serviced before you buy it.

·

That is absolutely a beautiful dial.

·

I would go for the RGM at that price point. Roland can get it back in top shape. Good luck!

·

I love this style of watches, didn't know that this model even existed but does look awesome, I have a similar watch with the exact same movement eta/valjoux 7751 and I love it, my advice is go for it, with those movements the brand doesn't really matter, every good watchmaker should be able to service it when needed and if the watch have value thats just an other reason to pull the trigger

When I think of RGM, it’s primarily for their in house movements they make. This one that you show is an ETA 7751 based Watch, so you’re just buying an RGM case/dial with this. Don’t worry about repair. There are so many brands that have 7751 and of course you can buy the movement new for total movement replacement for around $700

Skydive makes a good point, but to me this is like an original RGM, back when he was getting started. I would snatch it and then decide if you wanted to keep it. Maybe even offer a little less.
