Is Watch Collecting Genetic?

I just saw someone post one of their watches and talk about leaving it to their son. This is such a romantic idea, but with a one year old of my own I got to wondering how likely it is that he will care about watches.

I would say I am the only “watch person” in my family, but I did inherit the pictures Omega from my mom’s dad, and the pocketwatch below from my dad’s great grandfather. They may have been watch people, I didn’t really know either one of them when they were alive.

Well, early results have made me very reluctant to get a watch to pass on to my sweet boy…

Poll results lead me to believe that mine will always be all mine too, despite having a kid!

I just got back watch from a full day of watch shopping with my son for Father’s Day. He’s completely hooked on watches, more now than ever before. He bought a Ball watch and I got a new strap. We learned that we liked the Heuer Monaco. I never would have thought that. I guess the point is that I have 3 sons who are going to get my watches passed down to them. Some sooner than later. And I get a hobby to share with my sons. Win Win. But a great watch. It’s priceless.

When my father passed away I didn't realize how important his watch was to me. He had worn it all his life. Every scratch and ding in is important to me. He has been a watch guy and I caught the bug of wearing a nice watch from him. I collect because it reminds me of him

Yeah, an inherited watch can be very important to someone even if they aren’t a watch person. Doubly so for someone like you who is a watch person!

Sorry, I’m not quite sure what this comment means.

I am the only watch person in my family. I have three kids and I have three watches I hope to leave them. For me it’s not about them collecting. It’s looking at the watch one day to think of me.

Yeah, that’s the ultimate goal!

Seems like we are in the majority in that way!

I've no children so I guess all my watches will be going to the cats charity 😂

My dad bringing me to AD's and boutiques at the mall since I was a kid definitely helped me appreciate watches. Big milestones were punctuated with watches as gifts. Then came online watch media and meetup groups. In my opinion, you can't force an interest on someone, especially your kid, but you can make it more likely that they'll share it with you.

Genetic? No.

It's a relationship thing. If a watch geek has a good relationship with their children and shares their obsession in a way that brings joy to both of them, the odds are that the obsession will continue into the next generation.

And really, until my generation (GenX) watches were simply tools for the overwhelming majority of the population.

Those that did collect were usually of means and usually those with the means to be able to collect were well versed at passing down wealth & objects.

Like anything else though, there are always exceptions, so there are likely some families out there where the sole watch a person owned was passed down as sort of a sentimental birthright thing.

I think sharing your love of this hobby with your son one day is a very beautiful idea ❤️🤙
