At-home watch tinkering

The in-laws, specifically the MIL and Grand-MIL, found out I had an interest in watches and asked me to get their old quartz pieces running again.

As a Certified Quartz Technician ™️, (i.e. battery replacer/toothbrush cleaner 😅) I said “no problem!”

Anyone else lend a helping hand to your family for watch-related questions and service? My skills are limited but I find it quite fun.

I impulse bought a tank style watch in a local memorabilia and 2nd hand store ,it was dirt cheap anyway but I got it half price because it needed a battery I was recommended a local watchmaker who coul do it ,when I said I could do it myself the sales assistant looked at me as if I’d just levitated …I’ve swapped quartz movements before ,but that’s my limit.😁

I work on a few dozen every year. The relatives have started buying stuff at flea markets and yard sales then want me to get them running(usually without offering any financial assistance 😔). My brother has found a few nice pieces worth saving though 😉

Seeing the tuning fork on that piece of crap makes my stomach hurt.

Wide variety of styles/sizes, extremely low price points, lots of distribution channels and advertising, and with the quartz options you “set and forget” which I think really appeals to the masses.

To me, they’re style watches that don’t try to masquerade behind a luxury fashion brand. They just are what they are! And I like that 😊
