Surprise Sweety! *Please Don't Be Mad!*

Fellow Crunchers!

Has anyone here tried to both surprise their partner with a His&Her type gift, whilst satisfying their own need for a particular watch? I've already gone ahead and bought the two pictured; the quartz 36mm is for Her, the 41mm automatic will be mine. I'm getting them engraved with our wedding date, as these pieces are intended as our 5 year anniversary gifts.

BUT, here's the rub: she might get a little bit mad that I've gone ahead and bought more watches!😬 I'll be honest, I've been wanting to try this Addiesdive for a while, AND she loves the soft blue/teal texture of the quartz dial. We've been on the hunt for a nicer watch for her for months, and this one would suit her well! So I thought this might be a good 'two birds with one stone' type scenario.

Any particular thoughts on this? Perhaps I've been a bit too selfish and rash? There's definitely some guilt floating around about spending the money, and worry she'll be more angry than happily surprised! 😂 What's been some of your experiences with this kind of situation, and how did it play out for you? Any advice on how to smooth over any of the blowback I might get? Thanks in advance!

(If this surprise goes belly up, I'm not averse to just sending it all back of course!)

Hopefully she'll find it romantic, that you've thought of something for you as a couple.

Nice watches, unfortunately for me my wife doesn’t wear a watch

·

I've found over many years that it makes no sense to buy a watch for someone that isn't a geek.

·

This is a terrible idea if she doesn’t care for watches. I’m sure there are a lot of other things or experiences that would better demonstrate that you’ve paid attention to her interests. This feels more like a gift for yourself. Sorry.

I was in your boat a few weeks ago. I gave my wife a Cartier Must Tank Small steel bracelet first week January as a belated Xmas gift (no available ones during December 2023). I thought she would be over the moon as she’s only been using her two tone Tissot and her Seiko ssc813 solar panda. She got angry at me for buying another watch and almost had me return it 😭😭😭. Good thing she softened up after wearing it for a few days. She made me promise that was the last damn watch I’m buying for awhile 🤣🤣🤣

So my advice, if she’s not into watches and youve spent quite some money on your collection maybe rethink the couple gift 🤣

She's not a geek, but she has kept saying she wanted a 'nice' GADA type watch. Right now she wears a Baby G.

There is an element of this, absolutely. Hence also the slight guilt. However, she has kept saying she wants a 'nice' watch, like a GADA type, to complement her current BabyG that she wears non-stop. I thought this might do the trick..

Well, thankfully I've kept very very careful tabs on the money spent. We've got a rule, I only use 'my money' on watches. 'My money' is a fortnightly allowance that I get from our combined income. We both get the same fortnightly allowance that we can use however we like. This time though, because I've categorised it as a 'gift for both of us', it's come from the communal pool (without consulting her). Hence the fear she might not appreciate this at all... Despite my best sentiments. 😅

You should have led with that lol, sounds like a good gift then.

Sounds like a great system for both of you mate! I’m sure she’ll appreciate the gift! Yeah I use my money only too, separate from the conjugal funds, but Ive made a big purchase right before her gift so to her I was just feeding the addiction 🤣🤣🤣. Those Addies watches look great Ive been looking at them myself too. Good luck and 100% those watches look great.

A wife's opinion here: I think you've made a great choice. I have this watch (in this color). There are several advantages to this watch.1) It isn't terribly expensive so if she doesn't wear it very often, you won't be upset that you spent a ton of cash on something she doesn't wear. 2) This watch fits well on smaller wrists. I have a six inch wrist and it fits great. Not too big or heavy. 3) The dial and Mechaquartz makes this watch look more expensive and nicer than you'd be able to get with a big brand. 4) The quartz makes it an easy grab and go (it's often my choice when I don't want to set one of my mechanical watches in the morning). Well done!

Thank you! I thought these two paired well together, with the 36mm suiting her sizing better. And like you said, the specs should suit her. Grab and go quartz (but looks like an auto sweeping seconds), in her preferred colour, and can withstand most things. Fingers crossed she won't be too mad... 🤞😂

I want to buy what I want, not have to ask somebody else you know? I get why some folks are set up like this though.

Ha I see what you mean! Normally I'm free to do as I want with my money as well. However in this instance I think I'm feeling a little wary as I've used some of our joint income, rather than my personal allowance, as I argued that this is a gift for both of us. Hence the trepidation.. 🤣

That's really a great gift, What really matter is the detail you're having to mark such a great moment in your life, this might be the only watch your wife might always wear just because of the meaning of the gift. Watches with a history are the watches that worth the most.

We celebrated our engagement party buying a pair of His/hers movados, which we wore at the event, my wife loves her watch so much that besides her apple watch, her movado is the only one she'd wear for all the special events and family parties where formal is required. (No rolex, nor cartier, for her that's the only one she would pick from her jewelry box).

Enjoy then in good health and I wish you the best for your upcoming anniversary.

Thanks for sharing! I'm hoping it'll be similar for her. She's always worn 'just' a BabyG, and when I really started into watches last year, she'd ask every once in a while if there's anything I thought she'd like? 🤣 She's been wanting a nice GADA, and loves the colourway (I've shown her similar looking ones and she's said she'd liked them...). So here's hoping she can overlook the fact I used 'family money', rather than my personal allowance to purchase this! (I didn't have enough saved up in my personal money)

😅I think it's all boiled down to that aspect (now that I've gone back and forth with a few fellow Crunchers).

For Christmas 2023 we both inadvertently bought each other Casio F-91w’s (pink for her black for me) and it was a really special moment so I doubt you’ll get any pushback at all!

reminds me a bit on the Straum Glacier dials

That's cute! Love little 'mishaps' like that! Present time must have been hilarious, especially if one had opened their gifts before the other! 🤣

They're awesome dials, the main reason to go for this one actually. The specs are nice bonuses for a watch a this price point 😁

·

Haha! Yes, she got me back by gifting me with a smartwatch. I don't hate it, but I'm not really into smarteatches...

I did say next time we’ll aim for matching Cartiers’ instead! 😂
