I think the major disadvantage to silver is the legibility. There's not enough contrast between silver dial and silver hands, and the main purpose of a watch is to be able to read the time, correct?
I'd recommend looking at the 38mm AT shades in blue or green. 5 year warranty with nice dial, updated bracelet, etc.
If you're hung up on not having micro adjustments on the bracelet and the white background date dial (I think it integrated fine with the white lume on the markers) other choices might be better.
I've only been to Venice, but there are so many fake (and real) watches there that I feel like it would blend in. It seemed like there was a luxury watch AD everywhere we went in Italy!
If you're worried though, maybe it's best to leave it behind.
The Xeric watches are really cool and I've considered purchasing one but I can't get past the point that they're almost all, difficult to read at first glance.
I don't ever feel the need to have multiple watches with me on a vacation. I prefer to have one on the wrist at all times. I know where it is, don't have to worry about customs or hotel room theft, etc. I always pick something with water resistance and a screw down crown so it can handle a day in the water along with an evening on the town.
If I was in your situation (and was serious about buying a Panerai while abroad) I probably wouldn't wear a watch, would wear the Panerai for the remainder of the trip, and mail the box and papers home.
Vacations are where a Panerai, Seamster AT, Rolex, or any other number of water resistant watches that walk the line between sport and dress/bling excel! One watch for all locations and conditions.
Vacations are purely for enjoyment. If I can't enjoy my overpriced luxury watch during activities while I'm vacationing what's the point of owning it? It's like dating a supermodel and leaving her at home while you travel.

I don't really have that problem. If I love it, I like to wear it.
People are too hung up on watch diameter now. Unless it's uncomfortable, who cares?? I've got everything from microscopic to grossly oversized and wouldn't hesitate to wear any of them if the mood strikes.
