Watch accessories?

Im going away on the boat and tenting on islands during vacation and thought adding a compass to your watch seemed like a brilliant idea.

After that I found that there are some other more rare and niche accessories you can add to your watch.

Image

Like this looks great with military inspired watches.

Of course I found one with a Swedish flag!

Image

However I have also found these that might be good if you work in a very rough environment

I even found a thermometer!

Do you have any experience with accessories like these and do you know of any others?

I feel this gives you a lot of utility for us who actually go and touch grass from time to time.

I wear and use a wrist mounted compass on a strap often. It is not as accurate as a dedicated tool, but more of a general idea for cardinal points on scene for post blast or UXO cordons. It's also pretty useful for generic headings.

If taken off the strap and out of the housing, the button compasses are pretty accurate for true survival situations. Prometheus Design Werx, who made mine, actually sell theirs with the standalone rubber holders for that reason.

TBH, I'd still want a good old fashioned lensatic, topo map w/declination and a protractor/ruler, string and some ranger beads for true field work.

Also it seems to go with a field watch, fun/tool-y aesthetic:

I also enjoy Zulu Alpha's add-ons

The watch covers, meh, for real nighttime use, put the watch under your cuff or in a pocket. If my watch gives me away, I've bigger issues.

HOWEVER, those cuffs would come in HELLA handy for anything with lots of extra stuff (dust, debris, grass) flying around, weed eating, sandblasting, off-roading, etc. Might actually make one myself for ATV use in NM.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Ive seen people say some compasses are better than others. For right now I will just use it to be able to tell wich Island is wich for navigation wich it should be good enough for.

I didnt think of the lume aspect but yeah remember things that was hardly visable to the eye would light up the whole place through night vision. The cover up patch I thought could be a good fit for just as you mentioned, flying debris, construction, angle grinding, etc.

Sadly I wasnt into watches back when I serviced so I think I would have a lot of fun playing around with these tactical elements back then. I think I just had the cheapest digital watch I could find back then.

Can't say I'm a fan of such ancillaries. I've worn watches in some pretty austere (and tactical) conditions and I've never put the watch in a case, wrapped it up, covered it or put a compass on it. Any watch-compass is not accurate enough for any practical navigation (buy a Silva) and you can navigate using the sun and stars just as well in a survival situation. I grant you that the flag-keeper is a nice touch for the NATO strap.

I just bring one of these. All the function in one small package!

That's not my hand btw, just random Internet photo 😂

In my situation Im usually navigating these waters without a compass, since the islands are very close to eachother and you can make out the contours etc and compare it to the map, it would however just be nice to get a pointer on where north is when you get unsure. Its not like Im navigating across a sea. I understand how youre not a fan though as I can see myself get annoyed with the extra bulk on the strap after a few days. And I never used a wrist compass when I serviced either.

The old calendar plates. There are also medical alert things similar to that.

I always forget about these, need to get some.

I have several blood type, and allergy type plates, but need one of those calendars for sheer awesomeness on a good 80's Timex Easy Reader.

They seem to generally look like this and the prices are reasonable.

I don't have one yet but I'd prefer to ditch the little silicone stretcher if possible. Hilariously, what appears to be the same item is sold for pet ID's somewhat cheaper, and in this case more widths.

Image

Sadly, Amazon won't send me any money if anyone buys one from my links. How do I set that up to be a thing?

Interesting, wonder if a criket or cheapo engraver would put stuff on the metal?

Due to some technological miracle these are sold custom engraved for like the same price that you used to pay for a set of personalized military style dog tags, if that answers the question.

Great, yet another small doodad hobby lol. The only reason I have a legit heat gun and heat knife is to make my own Paracord laces for my leather boots.......while Pisgah makes a FAR classier aglet than I can with heat shrink tubing, felt a humongous roll of decent Paracord from hobby lobby, a heat gun/knife, and heat shrink tubing was more fun 😂.

In my country the week start on a Monday rather than Sunday so I dont seem to find plates like these, but I also never seen this before. Maybe they were never a thing here.

Compasses are often not reliable when they are near iron, so your photo of a compass mounted right next to a large iron luminor case does not seem ideal, unless one takes it off before reading. Personally when I have needed a compass I prefer a real dedicated compass, large enough to sight from. I haven’t had much luck with relying on tiny clip ons. Of course thermometers mounted on the wrist will be effected by body temp, so it’s also not an ideal location.

Regarding fabric watch cover, I have a hard time imagining a situation where one needs to protect the watch where a saphire crystal and a tough case isn’t sufficient. Though I suppose in a military situation where you don’t want your tritium dials attracting sniper fire at night might warrant covering up the emitted light.

I guess it would work better on a watch with a resin case in that case?

Well in my experience any time you weld with a wristwatch on you have a chance of getting metal splatter fused with the case and bracelet of your watch and the sparks from an angle grinder can damage the glass. I usually put the watch in the backpocket but I can also see myself wearing something like this if I was welding all day.

Stockholm archipelago. Just a small rowing boat with a motor hooked on

That sounds great fun, though I prefer my boats to have sails.

Far less hard work involved.

No hard work if you only use the motor! But Ive been sailing and managing a lot of different boats, as I grew up in these parts.

I have never thought of something like these add ons. You made me google for it now 🙈.
