Engravings…yay or nay?

For me…these provoke wonder.

In who..and why and when.

Thus giving this thing, this item a soul as it were… call it what you will.

Vintage watches, cars…anything ‘with a bit of age to it’ especially watches though… are things cherished by their owners, maintained…cared for.

An engraving on a caseback even if I never discover it’s relevance or meaning.. becomes meaningful and relevant to me…

I have no idea what SIO DAMS signifies…but I do know it’s now become this watches ‘name’ Dams…Sio Dams license to look frikken awesome on my wrist 😂

Have you got an watch engraved… what do you think future owners will make of your choice of words..

Ps…if anyone does know what this engraving means…

What is it the YouTubers say…

Comment below… (sounds a bit wanky to me to be honest)

But anyway…thoughts?

Have a few with engravings, more will be coming once they actually get released....😉😎🤘🏻👌🏻

I'll usually always pay the difference for an engraving. Just me but I see the caseback's when I'm putting on a single pass strap and it makes me smile.

My Russian neighbor said it says "Politics, 1978 (year)." It makes me wonder the story behind this.

Indeed… the 70’s were an usual time.. anarchy in the uk.. punk rock.. Thatcher government looming.

I was young… but I do remember.

I’m sure in Russia… it was worse.

Was actually just thinking about doing this to one of my newer watches. I always love finding engravings on vintage ones. Where would you even go to have this done reliably? A jeweler?

Jewellers definitely… or those places that engrave trophies…

If done right, I'm all for it. I almost never sell and something engraved would be personal and special.

I'd just like to thank my late great uncle with the two childless daughters, well actually his employer (Midland Coal & Lumber) for engraving that service watch so I know it's provenance. The back is rounded, polished, and the engraving shallow so it is terrible for photographing.

As others have alluded, I wouldn't mind engraving a watch for the right reason in the right way. And artless sans-serif tracing won't do. Although that gunpowder plot refence on the watch of @solidyetti may be copied if there is free engraving to be needlessly used in the future.

I have and have had a few. Only a few have any real meaning to me. This one is curious:

Image

Milber was an American brand that cased watches in New York using Swiss movements. Swiss movements were hard to get in 1943 because neither the seas nor the skies were safe.. Their first documented existence is several years after the date on the inscription. "Frederick Space, Jr." is an odd name and what is the "Edo Organization"?

(My theory is that the back doesn't belong the watch at all.)

On the fence with this one. If I ever decided to engrave a watch it would be a keeper to the very end. Watches I no longer want are given away, creating their own story.....engraved on the soul of the new owner.
