Junghans meets Grand Seiko

You would love to have a Junghans and a Grand Seiko? But you can't decide and wont spend a fortune?

Well...how about both in one single watch for less than 1 000 Euros?

A German Japanese colaboration? Yes indeed.

Let me introduce you the Junghans Spektrum Automatik . A very well propotioned and designed sporty watch. The case and bracelet is a mix of ceramic and steel which feels very nice and comfortable on my wrist.

Image

Inside beats a caliber called J830 . Based on the 9S55 from Grand Seiko (9S55 on the other hand is based on 9S51).

Junghans and Seiko Instruments worked together on the J830 for the Spektrum to creat the ideal movement for this sporty time piece with a well working and good looking result. It owns an open caseback with a view on the nice finished movement.

Image

Junghans offered the Spektrum Series as well as radio controlled and solar powered versions.

I own mine since a half year. The manufacturing quality is exquisit related to it's price. Even on my tiny 16cm wrist the 41,6 mm was fits perfectly.

A nice detail are the indizes. While the dial offers quite less lume with only little dots on 3, 6, 9 and 12. But the indizes and numbers are so well processed that they will reflect every little light source in the night.

Another Detail are the Numbers on the dial. While the 3 and 9 are brushed from left to right, the 12 and 6 are brushed from up to down. The result is a very interesting and playful reflecting of light. Depending on the ankle to the light source the 3 and 9 will shine bright, and 6 and 9 appears dark. If you move the dial it will reflect the other way around.

Both mentioned details are actually known from Grand Seiko as well. Even Junghans confirmed Seikos support for the Movement only.

Image

Unfortunately Junghans has big lack of marketing campanes. Less people know about the watch and the company, except the Max Bill line which is frequently mentioned.

This Spektrum shows that Junghans is able to offer much more.....for less.

The retail price was less than 1500 Euros. Which was insane for this quality.

The bad news:

Junghans cancelled this the Automatic-Version of the Spektrum. Which is a quite sad decission.

The good news:

It is still possible to find at jeweleries in Germany for arround 1K or even less.

I hope this information was helpfull to you.

Unfortunately the pictures doesn't show the real beauty. In real life the ceramic and the indizes and numbers are shining and sparcling so nice.

Cheers from Germany

p.s.

Sorry if there are some grammar mistakes 😅

Yea. Me too. This watch is really a master piece. The german design and japanese movement experience worked very well together.

·

Interesting collaboration.  Good review and no need to apologize for your English - it’s good.

I don't know why but on your first wristshot it reminds me of the VC Overseas, maybe the bezel and the way the bracelet is integrated...

It's a very interesting piece, thanks for sharing I didn't know about it. The only real faux pas for me is the date window (the date in general but that's me).

How is the lug to lug ? It does not seems too big for your wrist

So sad they stopped it

Yes. The lug tips of the case are similiar to those of the Overseas.

But the overall design is quite unique. I never saw thst kind of design before.

Yea, the date window is not everyones taste. For me it's ok. I especially appreciate that they matched it with the dial color.

Actually I don't know the lug measures.

But the lugs are relatively short and they are not streight. The shape of the lug tips showing down so they can hug the wrist.

Here is a video of a german youtuber.

Of course it's in germsn, but the shape and the reflection of the dial numbers are better to see.

I just went check on Junghans website and the solar version of the Spektrum seems still available (but can't find the price).

And it has a digital window date which I find is a nice trick digtial/analogic. Really love it

It might ve different may be if your are on the english/International Websitr.

In German they show the price for the radio controlled solar.

The size is the same, bit as you mentioned the dial is different and it has two buttons beside the crown.

Oh thanks for the informatuons mate. Yes I was on the fr website.

Price seems really fair regarding the built quality and the Junghans craftmanship.

·

You're welcome.

I also think it is a great deal.

But actually I never hold the radio controlled solar in my hand.

So I can only talk by experience for the Automatic.

I'm sure the case finish will be the same.

But I think the automatic has an even much better vallue for money due to it's highly finished Grand Seiko movement.

I've bought it in Summer this year for around 800 Euros from a Watch Boutique. Which was insane.

Anyone knows what the beat rate is ? I couldnt find it anywhere on the internet

Here's a screenshot of the manual, but only in german.

I'll try to translate:

•Automatic movement with date window

•Automatic winding on both directions

•Beat rate 28,800 /h

•28 Stones

•48h power reserve

•Antimagnetic by DIN 8309

•gold plated nickel balance wheel

Ah i see. Yes the watch looks interesting. The design itself of the dial is not my thing, but I like how the movement looks. I don't know if it's worth adding to my collection just for the fact how nice finishing the movement has. This is a nut, I found a offering on eBay, so I might jump the gun.

Actually the dial appears different in real light. Pictures and videos can't catch it.

But of course it's a matter of taste.

I think the whole design is unique. It's not a homage of another homage.

And I agree. The movement was aso my main motivation.

I found the watch new at a jewelery for 800 bucks. Where on earth can you get such a beautiful decorated high quality Grand Seiko movement in a watch for that price. It was like for free.

I saw it also on other jeweleries in germany who has it still on stock for less than 1,000 euros.

In my opinion this watch is a bargain.

It is actually quite sad, because allmost nobody knows about this watch even in germany. German watch companies (not only Junghans) have a big problem with marketing and communication.

They make less advertisment. They have no connections to youtubers, bloggers or writers. They don't offer events for die hard fans. Even the head of the "Junghans Fan Club" quit is position due the ignorance of Junghans to his fans. They rejected communication, they don't offered events or invited them. So the Fan Club was getting frustrated. They just bring a watch on the market and expect the jeweleries will do the job (but they horrible). So they think the old fashion way.

When I was searching fir the watch at the biggest Juweleries and asking for Junghans Spektrum, they were like: "What? We do only have Max Bill line. What do you mean with Spektrum?"

So many watch modells appears without any marketing campain and disappering again without notice.

The jewelery where I bought it heared about Junghans' decision to quit this model and he bought immediatly every watch Junghans had on stock. 😅 Because he understood the actual vallue of this watch.

I see what you mean. Yes I see. I really like the movement, but the style of the dial is not what I like. I like different colours and something more colourful, but oh my the movement. Very sad indeed :(

Reviews like this are why I joined. Huge fan of Junghans and didn’t know this existed. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you. I'm glad I could help.

Great Watch, the mix of the darker ceramic and the lighter steel kinda reminds me to Rado watches.

Yes. Especially the bracelet.

Ceramic is such a cool material.

It feels very nice on the skin. It doesn't get to cold and fits on the body temperature. And the coolest thing is, that it's scratch resisdent.

That's how I get mire intrested in ceramic watches and will may be buy a rado this year

Yeah that's also why so much affordable brands try to copy this style

I have the solar version & I love it, it's very simple, nice to wear and very accurate, it checks the time daily against the various radio-atomic clocks around the world and sets itself much like the Casio multiband 6. One of my favourite watches, I like one extreme to the other, very simple to busy G-Shocks LOL

Great. Thanks for showing.

Yes...it's one if the most independent watches. Doesn't need battery and no msnual adjusting. It simply does it's job autonomous.

Radio controlled solar watches are a speciality of Junghans.

Rare piece! Those 9s and 6s was used in their Erhard junghans line of watches back then
