Family Pocket Watches

I inherited this 1915 Waltham pocket watch from my grandfather after he passed away 3 years ago. Opening up the case back is what started my interest in mechanical watches, for better or worse...

Does anyone else have old family pocket watches? Are there any stories to go along with them?

Have a great weekend!

This was the watch of my uncle's father who was my grandmother's first husband and died in an accident when my uncle, my mother's half-brother and the oldest of 4 was still a young child.

That was 10 years before my mother was even born.

So this watch is a connection to a branch of the family that I never knew.

Thanks for sharing @AlexTheWatchmaker. Have you been able to learn anything about when or where it was made?

Live the graffiti on the back. Your grandfather had that wild style

·

Very nice of him to pass it on to you. I don’t think this new generation would be into such a gift.

·

Oh wow, aside from your engraved caseback, I own a very similar pocket watch.

Mine doesn't have an extensive family history yet. I got this one back in 1980 from one my HS teachers. Perhaps it will carry on to one of my kids.

I just got this one back, its my great grandfathers, but frankly I like my Illinois better. My brother is going to get it after he pays me the service cost. (1909) Howard.

That's a great story also! It will be great to pass this down to your kids to enjoy in the future.

I like the look of this one, especially with the minute track. Thanks for sharing!

Well my brothers kid anyway.

Great heirloom piece.

My grandpa had a pocket watch. Unfortunately, it went to my brother who subsequently threw it away years later when he claimed it wasn't working any longer.

Condolences on the passing of your grandfather. The watch is stunning, the decoration on the movement is eye popping, the dial is outstanding and the watch as a whole is great looking. Is it a railroad watch by any chance?

I appreciate the message. I'm not sure if it was a railroad watch, though I would love to find out more information about it.

A lot of information, including the grade of the movement, can be learned by plugging in movement serial number in the pocket watch database. https://pocketwatchdatabase.com/

Being 17 jewels and adjusted I am pretty sure it has a higher end movement. I just do not see any serial numbers from the picture.
