Watch Shopping

How do you choose a watch, typically?

Is it a predetermined watch, for example “Today I’m hunting a Rolex Explorer”?

Is it more of a spec list hunt? Has to be brushed, good lume, X size for Y price.

By value? I mean an unexpected opportunity at below market value. Example, “Amazon is blowing out old stock SKX for $100 I better grab one.”

For a while I was after rare or uncommon vintage anadigis. Ive built up a nice collection of that sort of watch. My tastes have developed a lot in a short while, with some thanks to this website and the exposure to other watches its brought me.

Sees watch. Researches watch. Buys watch.

In all seriousness, it is a mix. For the most part I have list of watches I am keeping an eye on. From there, I am looking for opportunity purchases. Some brands I will pick up new, but I would speculate a little more than half are preowned.

I typically start with something I want, for example; when I worked nights I wanted tritium. Had to be 40 or smaller. Decent quality and under $200. I ended up finding a Deep Blue DayNight 41. So it was a done deal.

I wasn’t even in pursuit of a watch when I found my Seiko SZSB016 for under $100. Just couldn’t not buy in at the price.

Mostly predetermined after a ton of research and 'sleeping on it' for days, if not weeks, although once in awhile something will come up - not covered by your list - which has seen me purchase before. And that's a newsletter or some sort of marketing throwing up an offer I can't refuse. And that might not be price-based. It may be be some limited edition thing at full retail. I see it, ponder whether I have genuine FOMO or whether it's something I'd never really considered but would enjoy... and sometimes I pull the trigger on that stuff. It's rare, for sure, but it definitely happens sometimes, and I'm sure will happen again.

I keep a short list in my head of models I want. Most of these I know I will never acquire but sometimes there is the rare circumstance where I find a good deal when I have the funds. That’s when I buy.

Or when I’m bored or when I have a bad day at work. That’s also when I buy.
