Ode to a simpleton

Or: Why do I keep going back to this watch so much? It’s so basic. I’m just a regular, everyday, normal guy i guess.

This is the ISL-40. This is my most worn in my simple, Islander heavy, collection. It’s not complicated, or busy, or fancy. I could even do away with the date. It’s still more expensive than a twenty dollar digital, and more costly to maintain, so I guess it’s a little fancy in that regard.

I wonder if it’s just that I’m happy with this level of boring. Because these watches we wear—anything over a twenty, they’re just art at that point, right? Wrist jewelry? But I still want to call it a tool, so it has to sort of act the part a little.

So I’ve chosen to snuggle into this little niche corner. I change the strap a couple times here and there, but most days of the week, i just come back to this standard issue watch.

Then I look at that ISL-129 Day-T, and I hang my head in shame at thinking of it as a better iteration and wanting it needlessly.

Hobbies is silly. I love it. Cheers.

That is a great looking watch, and perfect for everyday wear.

I tend to stick to fairly simple dials, with few complications as well. I want my watch to be primarily a device for time telling, if it can be made legible and a bit fancy that's a bonus.

I haven't picked up any Islanders yet, but I have come close a few times.

I'm quite simple myself. There's no need to get all fancy about things most days. 😀

There’s a lot to be said for a solid field watch, and Islander is a great brand.

The mechanical watch has two jobs these days: tell the time, and look how you want it to. I guess this is on the way to my ideal penultimate form.

I love the crispy gloss black paint outline of the hands filled with lume.

I wonder what it would be like with a domed crystal…

Yeah, Long Island Watches, great US based microbrand that manufactures mostly out of somewhere in SE Asia (cannot be confirmed), has excellent customer service and I think they ship to UK pretty regularly.
