Be honest have you ever bought a watch that you really didn't want because it was on sale?

A couple years back I decided to buy some Casio/Armitron watches that were being discounted. So like most collectors I bought a few. Two years later and they hardly get worn. Only bought them because they were on sale. Anyone ever done the same thing?

In fact, I've been very close to it several times, but so far I've always been able to hold back from making "unnecessary" purchases.

When watches are on sale, I take a closer look to see whether I really like the watch or whether it's just the price that's appealing.

Quite a few Seiko's, Hamilton's, Certina's and 1 from Oris. It took me a long time to stop doing it.

A watch on sale for $X isn't just trying to out compete $X in my wallet for my attention; it's also trying to out compete another watch in my collection. I like my watches to serve a specific use case, and I already wear a watch all the time. That means one of my watches is already filling every niche. If I buy a new watch, I know that it is going to have to take over part or all of an existing watch's role. Sales are nice, but that's just the cost to buy the watch, not the cost to wear it.

I am susceptible to a good deal. Can’t really say I didn’t want them, but they moved up the list solely based on price. 👍🏻

·

Yes. That's how I got one of these.

closest was in tokyo. the don quixote in shibuya had a brand new railmaster for $2100 USD on bracelet (sub $2k on the denim strap). super tempting. i wanted an aqua terra and this was essentially a brushed, more field-like aqua terra. price was right and i somehow managed to walk out with my wallet intact.

had I bought it, I probably would have sold it on r/watchex by now. that mentality of "I could always sell it at cost or even for a profit if I end up not loving it" is pretty dangerous and what I see catches a lot of impulse buying among enthusiasts.

The young Rolex ad owner was taking a cigarette break when he spotted me on my way to do some banking one July 4th afternoon in the late 1980s, said he had the deal of the century on a Rolex D/D if I could wear the new watch missing one gold link. Some tourist visiting Canada needed an extra link for a watch that he bought for the holiday weekend. Seem to recall the list price was around 10kcad, a link might have been $500, guy would sell the watch for $6500 cash no tax. I think we settled on 6k but the watch would be snug on hot humid days.

Guilty as charged.

I've generally been more influenced by YouTube reviews, bought the watch online and then rarely wore it... I'm not really a flipper so occasionally it gets some wrist time...
