Update: So I fell back in love with the watch and decided to keep it on for the entirety of the day. I included some additional photos that I believe are even better than the one I took this morning.

Starting my day with the Lake Suwa on my wrist for watch number one. I plan to rotate between two or three watches throughout the day—let's see how that goes! This particular piece has been waiting its turn for some time, so it's a pleasure to wear it again this morning.

Good lord this is awesome.

·

There are two versions of this I think. Is it the lake suwa (lighter blue) or lake suwa before dawn (darker blue)?

·

Beautiful!

·

What a well executed dial! She's a beauty Paul.

·

Now I want (another) Grand Seiko.. THIS...

·

Repeating myself from other WRUW comments but GS and it's dials... Can really see a lake on that dial, great piece on wrist Paul!

This is the lighter SLGA019. The darker one is the SLGA021

💯 Thank you! 🙏🏼

Magnificent dial - and spring drive, too, with no obnoxious power reserve!

Indeed, Grand Seiko never fails to impress with their dials! Thanks for the compliment, Danilo.

I totally get it; Grand Seikos have that effect! I fell so hard for GS that I ended up getting three within just a few months. They're irresistibly collectible, aren't they?

Absolutely, the way GS captures natural beauty in their dials is just mesmerizing. Every time I glance down at my wrist, it's like having a miniature Lake Suwa with me. Thanks for the kind words!

Seems like you’ve been enjoying your Orient lately.

Yeah. Been meaning to put it in the rotation. I find myself wearing the same watch for a few days.

I wish I could be wearing this one tho. The crown is way too stiff, which I’m sure means it needs a service.

The size is my only reservation but I got to try on yesterday and was pleasantly surprised how it wore. My other GS are 37mm and 38.5mm so the 41 is a bit of a jump. The Evo9 cases wear much better than the size specs would indicate.

Actually, it's a 40mm, not 41. But you're right, it does wear surprisingly well for its size, much better than other watches with a similar diameter. The design really makes a difference in how it feels on the wrist. Speaking of slim profiles, your choice of the Omiwatari with its manual winding mechanism and shorter lugs showcases this perfectly, wearing true to its size.

It seems we have similar wrist sizes, and from my experience, you should be able to carry off this size beautifully. My own collection includes a 37mm Yacht-Master with a 43.5mm lug-to-lug and a Black Bay 54 at 46mm lug-to-lug, demonstrating how varied the same diameter can appear on the wrist.

The new Evo9 collection, especially those with the 9SA5 or 9RA2 movements, exemplifies Grand Seiko's efforts in refining case thickness. I'm hopeful they'll apply similar slimming techniques to their Spring Drive GMTs, like my SBGE285 MistFlake, which could definitely benefit from being at least 1mm slimmer, ideally 1.5mm, to enhance wearability. As demonstrated in the picture below, the watch snugly hugs the wrist without appearing overly wide or bulky.

Just wanna show you what the BB54 & YM37 look like on wrist.

Image

Notice how the YM37 appears much smaller on the wrist compared to the BB54, despite both watches being technically the same size by standard measurements. This really underscores the impact that design elements can have on the perception of size.

It's truly fascinating how such subtle details significantly influence our experience with a watch. I hope you discover the perfect fit for your preferences! This diversity is what I cherish about the world of watches—there's something out there for everyone. Cheers Luke!

I always dread sending my watches in for servicing. Fingers crossed the repair costs won't be too steep.

Thank you! That’s extremely useful information! I appreciate all of the insight. It is crazy how different watches with the same dimensions can feel on the wrist.

I felt that I knew what I was getting into when I bought that watch. It definitely looks like it had been around for several years, and figured that there was a reasonable possibility that I would have to pay for it to be serviced, like a responsible owner.

It sounds like you approached buying that watch with the right mindset, understanding both its history and the care it would need. Taking responsibility for servicing is part of the charm and commitment of owning a vintage piece. You're not just owning a watch; you're preserving a piece of history. Cheers 🥂

It's a stunning piece, Sam. I was overjoyed when they released this as a regular production model, especially since the idea of paying above retail for a used watch didn't appeal to me. Plus, there's something about a brand-new, mint condition watch that I just love!

·

I love your natural nature for overachieving Paul. Three watch changes in one day is next level. I'm lucky if I remember to change my watch in the morning. 🍻

Thanks for the kind words! 😉Switching watches three times a day has become less frequent for me, but I usually make at least one change in the evening as I switch into my pajamas—unless, of course, I'm already wearing a sturdy sport watch with good lume. It's all about finding the right watch for the right moment- like my trusty Sprite for the evening. Cheers Craig!
