Vulcain cricket

Can someone explain to me why the Vulcain cricket does not have a display case back. From my understanding an alarm function is an advanced complication up there with minute repeaters and the like. Why doesn’t vulcain want to show it off. Perhaps it is not in house??

I would imagine that the resonance of the alarm would be affected and so the sound and possibly the volume might be adversely affected.

A steel caseback on the original was integral to the sound and not messing with that might be the reason.

A quick google will show you that they offer the option of see though or closed.

That said closed will give better sound.

Do you know if an alarm function is as complex as I believe or am I misled?

They don't want you to see the gum and paper clips. 😎 (Teasing, of course.)

I would ask @Aurelian he tends to know stuff like this.

Would definitely defer to someone who services them on this as not really in a position to make a fully informed comment.

I have often admired vintage alarm watches but with that additional mechanical complication as well as a separate spring and spring winding mechanism to power the alarm there is obviously more to go wrong and parts may be harder to come by.

I understand that capable watchmakers should be able to service them but perhaps with additional time being required - so additional expense to me.

But it would be great if someone with experience of servicing them chips in on the thread.
