My Seiko SNK Po-mo

By CRAIG MOREY

Breaking a perfectly good watch, hoping to make a better one.

I don’t scuba, or pilot a plane, or skipper a ship.

That being so, “tool watches” (as watch enthusiasts call them) such as true divers’, aviators’ or sailors’ watches would be lost on me — or at least merely a bit of fantasy on my part. That’s not to say their core features aren’t useful to me, but being waterproof doesn’t mean I need a watch to withstand diving to great depths, just as being easy-to-read in the dark doesn’t mean I need NATO standard radioactive promethium coated minute hands. Or the associated price.

But if I could be presumptuous for a moment, I’d add a new tool watch category — the “parent watch”....

You made your grandfather's watch. Small is more comfortable and the old timers figured that out where lately it was forgotten and they wear dinner plates now. Those parts can all be purchases from Aliexpress where a lot of local retail places get them. Cases for around 30 bucks with sapphire. Dials around 15 bucks hands 14 bucks and nh35 around 40.

Lovely looking mod, I think it all works really well together!

That’s a dope mod 🤙🏾

I would buy that in a second - nice!

So what. It's an SNK809 case with an SKX dial (yawn).

So this. This watch looks spectacular. Before I read the article I thought this was an actual new Seiko 5 variant, and that's saying something. I was wondering how much it would cost. I was thinking that I could afford that! (I am also neither Swiss nor insane). And as a guy who takes about half an hour to change the battery in a quartz watch (I have 23 of them), I appreciate your working with all those tiny parts. Just changing those miniature batteries alone drives me crazy.

What I also really like is how this watch is much more than the sum of its parts. It shows what can be done with just good standard quality components.

And there was a bonus, the writing was top notch too. But one thing was left out. What is this model's Porridge Splatter Rating?

I would too, although I would really like it to be quartz (nitpicking).

It really does, and almost doesn't look like a Seiko any more, even though the case and dial are both Seiko. It looks European to me now, almost Bauhaus.

There is at least one comfortable dinner plate. I have the Tissot Everytime Large (its actual name). It's 42mm, all dial, no bezel. Not only is its silver minimalist dial glorious, there's lot of it. And I think it's only about 7mm thin. You can't even feel this watch on your arm.
