2024: The Yeah of the F91W? (Part 2)

At the beginning of the year, I embarked on a personal challenge: to wear only the Casio F91W for the entire year of 2024. I figured it would be a fun experiment in minimalism and practicality, but I wasn't sure how long the novelty would last. Well, two months in, I'm pleasantly surprised to report that the F91W has become my everyday watch of choice, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience.

This little legend has defied my expectations in several ways. Firstly, its comfort is unmatched. The lightweight resin band practically disappears on my wrist, making it perfect for all-day wear. Secondly, its durability is impressive. I've worn it while tinkering in the workshop, taken it swimming, and even slipped it under my work shirt in the office – it takes everything in stride.

But the F91W's appeal goes beyond practicality. Its simple, classic design has a certain charm that transcends trends. It's a timeless piece that feels equally at home on the job site or out on the town.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect is its versatility. Despite its basic functionality, the F91W offers everything I need in a daily watch: timekeeping, alarm, stopwatch, and backlight. It's a reminder that sometimes, less is truly more.

So far, this year-long experiment with the F91W is proving to be a success. It's comfortable, durable, and surprisingly versatile. It may not be the flashiest option on the market, but it's definitely exceeding my expectations and proving to be my MVP of 2024.

I'll be sure to check back in with another update in June to share my continued experiences with the F91W. In the meantime, if you're looking for a watch that's comfortable, durable, and effortlessly stylish, the Casio F91W is definitely worth considering. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it!

Every time I wear my f91 I question my logic and justification for all my other watches. That little casio is really all anyone needs.

Yes, exactly right... but we still crave more, and I'm trying to understand why by forcing myself to just wear one watch all year.

I appreciate the historical aspect of this model but with today’s various affordable Casio models with improvements, I just don’t get why anyone would buy a F91W today.

Enjoying the journey so keep up the good work.

But, being slightly heretical, the F91W is a bit of a puzzle to me and I might just answer my own question - or you might by the end of the year.

I get that it’s cute, iconic, close to the originals, etc. but why spend say $17 bucks for an F91W when you could spend say $31 bucks on a DW-291 (other amazing low price Casios are available) and get so much more?

[Now admittedly they are inexpensive so you could have both - QED?]

And - as you will likely prove - the F91W is probably better for a year of wear in a more comfortable urban lifestyle while the DW-291 might only suit a more industrial or rural outdoor lifestyle as a daily.

But in a small collection the DW-291 stands out as offering pretty much GShock capabilities for a fraction of the money (I would be on my third before approaching the bottom of spend on an entry level GShock) and I could see myself reaching for it often.

But the F91W I wouldn’t see myself choosing that over others as it doesn’t distinguish itself enough over other watches. Perhaps the alarm might be its USP absent another digital in the collection?

That’s not to say that it’s not a distinguished watch and I certainly admire it as the forerunner for all the good things that followed. But I personally am more eager for one of the good things that followed.

Undoubtedly heretical but that’s what comes to mind whenever I see the F91W.

Point taken...but it's an F91W! No really, yes the choice of so many models is what makes Casio awesome, but what makes this particular watch, and one of the reasons it's deemed 'iconic', is it's a product design that hasn't changed since it's first release decades ago. That's quite a rare thing in itself. Society has changed so much since and this still hits the mark all these years later.

It's all love! Casio is such an awesome company with so many watches that I want! I love them all. I picked this one primarily because I had it already, everyone knows it, and to see if I could 'cure' this watch voyeurism issue (which in itself is a larger talking point).

·

As big of a fan that I am of the f91w, a whole year!? I could do a month or two at most before I would miss the rest of my collection too much.

That said I'll try this for a month because the f91w really is all one would ever really need. Sounds liberating. Good luck on the rest of the journey.

·

I could see me doing that with the Casio A168 as the metal look and illuminator light just bump it up a bit, albeit price too. Not saying I will do that though 🤣

·

I wish my the F91W looked better on my 7.5 wrist as it's my childhood watch. I own it and I'm actually wearing it everyday in 2024 too but it's on my son's wrist 😅. I gifted him this as his first watch last year (he's 7 years old) and we have to fight him to take it off. I wasn't sure if he'd like watches, but the fact that he's wearing my childhood watch everyday brings a special type of joy I can't even explain.

·

Good luck with it! Still love the F91 although I haven't had one in years, especially after I went for the W86, but it gives me all the same emotions that you've just described (whilst being a little chunkier and having a usable light!) Will defo keep an eye on your journey haha

·

Can you picture the other watches I your collection to have some context?

·

I didn't do a challenge but putting it back on my worst last year resulted in me having six of them.

·

I was tempted to do this with my Casio MQ24-7B2, but it's just too small for my wrist to be the only watch I could wear for the year.

I wore that everyday for years before getting into watches, and before becoming a dad. The sleepless nights are what gave me baby brain and I now need to look at the dial to know what day it is!

its the only watch you will ever need 👍
